When we moved into this apartment in September, every room except the kitchen and bathroom was painted in the same classic rental color – between white and yellow and not too beige. It’s the kind of color you can use to look halfway decent for a photo, but think it’s enough to live with. I knew I could lighten things up with a fresh coat of white paint and be done with it, but I also felt this was an opportunity to experiment with bringing in some color and playing with light.

The thing is, adding color to the walls scares me. With most things at home, I’d say I’m pretty confident, but paint color seems unpredictable. What if I choose green and it’s too yellow? What if blue reads purple? What if mustard turns chartreuse during the day and turns brown at night? In the grand scheme of things, people can say “it’s just paint”, and “you can always change it” and that’s true, but it’s also true that painting is a real investment of time and money. If I’m going to paint this place myself between work and child fights and generally run around like a chicken with a severed head, I want to get it right the first time.

I decided to call the experts. Beloved British paint company Farrow & Ball has been virtualizing their Color Consultation since the start of the pandemic, so I reached out to see if they would let me use the service for a test drive. I’m glad they agreed! Like that:
Prior to my consultation, at the request of my assigned Color Consultant, I installed a headboard for each room. This is the easy part. I filled the virtual board with photos of my own home, photos found on the internet and favorite paintings from the museum collection, which together represent my favorite color palette: soft greens, golds and ocean colors. Among her inspirations are Fairfield Porter’s Calm Morning and Maggie Pate’s indigo hands. Always a fan of Lois Dodd’s window paintings, I added View Through Elliot’s Shack Looking South and Blue Sky Morning. I’m including a photo I found of a pale red shirt on a concrete floor, and another with plants and warm wood trim on a dark wall.
The morning of my consultation, the Farrow & Ball Color Fan arrived at my door and at the appointed time, my Color Consultant, Jet Patterson, called me. We met via video chat and we toured the apartment together, I took my laptop with me showing him the rooms and lights and generally chatting in his ear while I showed him how to set up the space. For the purposes of this consultation, we focused on the three main rooms of our apartment: dining/living room, bedroom and children’s room. Each of these rooms flows into the next through French doors, so I wanted to create a palette that could be used throughout the space. Jets got it.
Next, at his direction, I removed the cover of the color fan so that I could remove the individual cards from the deck and stick them directly to the wall. The suggestions are his – based on my cues, and what he sees in front of him – but the process feels collaborative. We started with a set of a dozen colors taped to my living room wall and narrowed it all down through a quick process of elimination. “Take anything you don’t like,” she suggests, and I look at five or six colors that I know won’t work.
Choosing Paint Colours And Decorating With Farrow & Ball
Even on a computer screen, the Jet’s color performance is impressive and very comfortable. (Once, when I accidentally drew a card with the wrong white color, he said it right away and asked me to double-check the name.) He used my instinctive reaction to a certain color to understand what was being done.I. then and what works best in our space. We return to the color card, we hang it to the light and away from it. For an hour, as we walked around the apartment, he used words like shiny and cloudy to describe the color of the paint. (I use words like baby milk and dirty to describe what I want to avoid.)
At the end of the call, we decided on four possible paints—two white and two colors. Jet ordered samples and just a few days later four small pots arrived at my apartment: All White for the walls and trim in the dining room, Strong White for the trim in the nursery (vs. All White on the walls), Cromarty for our bedroom walls. , and Dove for the dining room floor. Instead of painting the swatches directly on the wall, Jet suggests that I paint an 8 x 12 sheet of watercolor paper with the swatch. The sturdy paper sheets meant I could move the colors around the apartment, watching how they caught the light and changed depending on the time of day. For weeks I moved them around our space until I finally ordered all four colors. I have been working on painting ever since.
Not surprisingly, this is a work in progress. I have to finish the nursery and tidy up behind my bed. There are some points that need to be fixed and the help of an artist higher than me, but the effect is important.

As part of the consultation, Jet offers advice on paint applications for walls, ceilings and trim. On all the walls we decided on Farrow & Ball’s latest finish, Modern Emulsion. beautiful Not as shiny as eggshells, but completely washable and specially made for busy areas (ie, every area in a small apartment with three kids). No doubt, its durability and washability have been thoroughly tested with splashes of spaghetti sauce and watercolors and frozen blueberry fingerprints.
For the trim and floor finish, we decided on Estate Eggshell and on the ceiling, we used the Dead Flat finish. If you live in an old or rented house, the ceiling is an area that is often neglected. In our bedroom the ceiling has lots of stains in different colors and finishes and a fresh coat of flat paint freshens up the room a lot.
At Jet’s insistence, I also took the room’s full-length wall color. The wall color stopped earlier on the slide and went to my own fixture which I will probably follow. I’m so glad I listened to Jet instead. Rooms feel taller and more elegant this way.
School House White
As for the color, I like it. The All White was as light and airy as I expected and a huge improvement over the less creamy one. The dove on the dining room floor deviates enough from my usual choices to feel fresh and interesting but subtle enough not to overwhelm the room and pairs nicely with the adjacent Cromarty in our bedroom. Cromarty is a color that changes during the day—from a really pale gray-green to a darker shade at night, but now I’m not tempted to call it unpredictable. To borrow Jet’s words, it’s almost great
