I have an undying love for Farrow & Ball paints and am filled with joy when a customer asks me for color advice. As the brand continues to grow in popularity in this country, the most common question I receive is: what makes this paint different from other brands on the market?

Farrow & Ball has been making paint and wallpaper in the same factory in Dorset, England, since the company was founded by chemists John Farrow and Richard Ball in the 1930s. Unlike other paint manufacturers who switched to cheaper acrylic formulations after the war, F&B remained essentially unchanged. They continue to use traditional methods and high-quality raw materials such as umbra, chalk and clay.

Their paint is factory colored. This allows for tight control of quality and color and, most importantly, allows larger quantities of pigment to be used.
Pigments are the ingredients that give paint its color and are the most expensive ingredient in the formulation. The quality of the pigment affects not only the color depth but also the paint’s ability to provide good coverage and longevity. Farrow & Ball say their paint contains 32% more pigment than the typical industry standard.
Perhaps the best known of the Farrow & Ball line of paints is Estate Emulsion. Don’t be afraid of the word emulsion. This is really just another name for paint. Estate Emulsion is what sets F&B apart from other brands. This is because clay is used as a binder. All paints need a binder to adhere to the surface and stop the dye.
I’m going to get a little technical here. But be patient and you’ll see why clay binders are important. It must be protected from light.

Color and light are soulmates, and the way light interacts with paint can change the properties of colors. Acrylic paint is a type of plastic, so when light hits the wall, it immediately reflects off the surface. This is called “mirror image”.
With clay, light hitting it is absorbed to varying degrees and travels in many directions before exiting. This is called a “pause”.
What this means to our eyes is that depth is added to both the surface and the color. What we are looking at are multiple layers of pigment, not just the top layer.
Clay gives a nice, flat texture and a variety of results. Colors like Pigeon or Lime White give the look of natural stone. Colors like Down Pipe highlight your chameleon nature. It can make seemingly bright and bold colors look gorgeous. Saxon Green is my personal experience with this.

A highly edited palette of 132 colors is easy to work with and isn’t overwhelming. The best part is that F&B paint contains no formaldehyde or ammonia. Open a liter of Estate Emulsion and you will see that there is no smell. This paint was eco-friendly long before the term was coined. All products are classified as low-odor and VOC-free, with the exception of the primer and base coat, which are listed as low-VOC.
If you read the back of the color chart, you’ll see that many of these colors have historical context. Farrow & Ball has worked closely with the National Trust on a number of restoration projects. The man who brought Farrow & Ball onto the world stage in the 1990s was Tom Helm, former decoration consultant to the National Trust.
F&B was used at Windsor Castle and at Highgrove, residence of Prince Charles. Here in Canada it has been used in several art galleries, including the National Gallery in Ottawa.
It would be a mistake to think that Farrow & Ball colors are only useful for historical projects. This versatile table can also be used in a modern setting.
