When I wrote a blog post about catch and beat (which you can read here) – this second grid accent wall project, I realized that a grid wall is completely different than a simple board and batten and deserves its own plans : ).

For the past six years we’ve had pallet boards as a feature wall behind our bed, but 2020/2021 is a light and bright (ALL) year for me.

After seeing how the lattice wall in my daughter’s bedroom turned out last summer, I knew it was only a matter of time before I did the same in my bedroom.

I decided to write this post to show you how to make a grid accent wall in hopes that you will be interested in making a wall in your home!!

I also painted every inch of my master bathroom in Spring 2020 down to the bathroom floor. You can read posts about bathrooms here and how to drill floors here :).

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a self-proclaimed flamboyant person. If I could have it on every wall in the house, I would. Well wait, I think I’m almost done 😂.

It adds character and beauty to any room and it’s actually not as hard as you might think (if you think about it!).

This step here is one that many people struggle with. Or the designer can start working on the project and everything will be fine.

If you’re half-full or don’t want to be embarrassed by your visible seams and their uneven placement, do yourself a favor and take the time to prepare for this step!!

My husband recommends using chalk on your driveway to outline the size and shape of your walls (especially if there are windows). Then place your boards on this sheet so you can see where your boards meet with your battens.

It is absolutely necessary to have a batten covering each board. Otherwise, you’re doing a lot of work with sandpaper, wood filler, and/or glue to hide the codes and still get the same results as the pros who do this 😬.

The second important part of this step is MEASURING!! Holy Toledo – we must have done this step ten times!! Then ten times again when we started the project and put the lines on the wall!

And if any of you have read my planning or budgeting posts – HERE’S MY PAPER AND GRID PAPER helping us out (again)!!

We measure the length and width of our wall and know we need 7 lines across and 4 lines down. We then take measurements of the width of all strokes in each row and divide by the total number of rows to determine the square footage.

Even with all this preparation, we ended up giving away two pieces when we were told the square footage was wrong. If your wall is like a brick wall, it is not solid or even in size at the top and bottom of the wall. Let’s think about it…

Using water nails and the nail gun, you’re ready to put those boards on the wall and start the craft part of the project.

I would tell your brain that part of the paper is done, but if you read the first step, you’ll know that we messed up a few times with our square measurement and the shape of our wall, so the brain exercise is going to end. .. 😂

Drafting and painting the boards BEFORE you start installing the battens will save you a lot of time. You will still need to paint the other two colors at the end of the project, but this will take a while to cover all the corners because the square is already there. Hey, there are a lot of corners to work! !

My accent wall color is an old Frazee paint called White Shadow that I can find at Sherwin Williams (they bought out Frazee a while back :)). My wall color is Sherwin Williams Available Beige.

First you will install the vertical battens. We even put all our studs on the wall before we put them in so we can go in and make sure everything lines up.

This is where a laser level is the BEST WAY FOR THIS PROJECT! So do yourself a favor and buy this kit!!

Once all your verticals are on the wall, start on the horizontal. This is where going up and down the stairs in all these places really helped us practice daily during the week it took us to do this project 😂.

Meet Teresa Frazee: Artist/ Writer

A good friend of mine on Instagram introduced me to this product and now I don’t want to do a milling project without easily filling a hole!

This is a step that I have seen many people skip. But I’m so precise in my grind that when I run my hand over the clasped wrists, I don’t want to hear a single thing. I want it to feel as good as butter.

My main goal is to find those intersections where you can’t even tell where one stroke starts and the other ends. But sometimes I’m lucky enough to get results. Take enough time with steps 7, 8 and 9 and you can do it!

I was really bored with this project so I decided to get some scraps from some of our adventures… 🤷‍♀️

I really got a good workout with this project! Too bad I can’t keep hitting things at home to keep my hands clean 🤪.

I feel like in my fourth home sewing project, I’ve gotten better at my socks. I wear gloves so my fingers don’t get raw. And I know how you want a width that can open and fit!! I would like to advise you on this, but really: this is one of the exercises that gives you absolute mastery 😳.

Since you have already applied two coats of paint to the back boards, now you just need to sand the area and make the boards and paint the same.

We bought white MDF boards so they were already used and using the wheel on them was quick.

It’s the tricky corners that will take you the longest, but the finished mural took about three hours in total, and a quick second coat for the finish took less time.

It makes all the difference knowing that I inspired and/or encouraged you to do a project, trip, or party you enjoy with friends, ANYTHING!
