First and foremost, it is the entrance to your home. Your front door welcomes family and friends. A colored door can tell your story, and it adds charm and appeal. There are many popular colors for front doors, but I’m focusing on blue. We had two houses, and I chose blue doors for both!

Several years ago, in the spring of 2011, I gave the kitchen cabinets in my Sutton Place home a fresh coat of paint and some updated hardware. I knew I wanted to paint some of the cabinetry an accent color, and I knew blue would be perfect. I didn’t know it was hard to remove blue paint! After some thought, and a few trips to the paint store, I finally decided on Sherwin Williams Navy. When I saw it on my kitchen cabinets, I knew right away that my front door had to be blue too.

Which Colour Should You Pick For Your Front Exterior Door

We had already installed a new fiberglass door with sidelights, and matching the exterior color palette of our house, I knew a dark blue door would be perfect.

When we moved into the Sugar Maple house, I had my heart set on painting the front door the same shade of blue we have on Sutton Place. When we tried the paint samples, however, I knew right away that it was wrong. It was very dark, and he turned the door to stone. He did not recommend the color scheme of the house. I knew I wanted to stick with blue doors, and after trying a few different samples, I decided on the Sherwin Williams range. It literally comes from the street, and painting the door really updated the curb appeal of our house.

Both doors were painted with a gray primer, followed by two coats of Sherwin Williams Durance Exterior Acylic LaTeX in a satin finish. Both porches are covered with roofs, so they don’t get much sunlight. The navy door has never shrunk, and the door area is still beautifully maintained.

Painting entry doors can be tricky. If you have a front door with sidelights, it is better to paint sidelights and trim around the door a neutral color, and then paint the door an accent color. This will give your home maximum appeal by providing an attractive contrast. In other words, you build a frame around your door.
