Gauntlet Grey Sherwin Williams Cabinets – Since we’ve been living in this house, I’ve hated our kitchen. I didn’t like the color of the cabinets, and the copper accents throughout the house didn’t really match the rest of the house (measures, pans, etc.). Renovating the kitchen was not in our budget while we worked on the rest of the house. But the kitchen cabinets are painted.
I didn’t particularly like how the black line and black counters made it look like a black hole.

Agreeable Gray Coordinating Colors
In an effort to update the kitchen without breaking the bank, over the past few years we have painted the walls SW Mindful Grey, the pantry door SW Tricorn Black, and I painted the backsplash with ceramic paint. . And then, a few weeks ago, I decided that I had enough of the old wooden cabinets and decided to paint them!
If you remember, I used Gauntlet Gray for the tiles around the front door and around the fireplace. It’s the perfect gray for our house because it’s so much bigger than dark gray. We have ceramic tiles throughout the house that we can’t replace right now and this shade works perfectly.
Although there is still a lot of work to be done, I love the difference that just painting the cabinets can make to the look of the kitchen. What do you think? Painting The Kitchen Cabinets
When choosing a dark gray for a wall, closet, exterior trim, or entire room, it’s important to consider the temperature, LRV, and gray tones you’re looking for, especially the Sherwin Williams gray glove-like personality. . !
I like to show homes that are appropriate and realistic, so only use my client photos for online color consultation. This means I don’t always have the quality photos I need (hence the “quick view”), but I certainly have some very useful information to help you along the way!
Gauntlet Gray is a warm gray with a black midtone. While this is often the case
, actually has some serious considerations because it is not as cool or neutral as many people expect when looking for “traditional gray”.
If You Don’t Like It, Paint It!
And since the Gray Gauntlet is hot, even in the northern lights, you’ll have a hard time keeping it cool.
Gauntlet Gray has an LRV of just over 17, which puts it at the mid-dark end. It’s not as thick as a dark undertone, but not as soft as a standard midtone (learn more here).

Gray Gauntlet has a purple tone that is a bit muted compared to other popular grays. However, compared to gray with a dominant purple color, it can take very little green (barely).

As with any color, I recommend using a pattern. A sample is a sample of leather and wood colors that you can easily move around your room for half the price of traditional sample packs – and they’re delivered to your front door!
Gauntlet Gray is very flexible when it comes to decor, but Sherwin-Williams prefers Pure White, a warm, soft white.
You can! If you have southerly light or very bright eastern morning light, you will find that the gray glove appears brighter and warmer than expected. It will be slightly shadier in northern light or mid-afternoon in western light.
Tried And True Paint Colors
Just because it’s good doesn’t mean it’s popular. Many people rely on shades of blue-green or light gray when choosing colors for interior or exterior walls. Gauntlet Gray works best for a dramatic look in a room, as a feature wall or as the main color for an exterior, trim or front door.
You won’t find an exact match for every color between brands – you’ll see variations in hues, temperatures, and depths. And while I want Benjamin Moore to have options that relate to the beauty of the Gray Gauntlet, some have the same intentions but different approaches…
