Gimp Remove Background To Transparent – Removing background of image is easy if you know how. Here in this tutorial, we will cover five different methods that you can use to remove background from images using GIMP.
There are many ways to extract a part of an image. This can be the background of the main object of your image or part of it. This includes making the image background transparent and the associated steps.

GIMP is the closest free and open source Photoshop alternative used by millions of people every day. And if you’re new to GIMP or learning image manipulation, it doesn’t hurt to learn these steps for making any part of a complex image transparent, including the background.

The steps described here use the same basic tools as other photo editing software. Therefore, what you learn in this tutorial can be easily applied to alternative software.
The Fuzzy Select tool allows you to select all pixels that are similar to a sampled set of pixels in a local region of the image. This works for images with color difference between foreground and background images.
So if the background and subject/top foreground of the image are the same color (like the image below), this method may not help. Try the other methods described below. But if you have some free time you can still go ahead and try all the methods.
You can repeat this process as many times as you want to completely remove the background of the image.
How To Remove The Background From An Image
In the next method, we’ll use the color-based selection tool to select all backgrounds that have the same color pixels. This method works better for vector images, which generally have a more uniform color distribution. This method may not work well for real-world images with lots of color gradients or sharp edges.
Another way to remove the background of an image is to use the Path tool. This is a manual way to remove the background of an image.
This method gives the most accurate results out of all the methods described here. But it takes some time and patience.
A more sophisticated way to remove the background is to use a layer mask. This is useful for photos that have fine details like your hair, fur, grass, etc. These fine details are difficult to capture manually using the above methods.

But there is a catch. This method works best only when there is a high degree of color contrast between the main subject of the image and its background.
To enhance parts, you can use the white brush tool to fill in areas that are part of your main subject but become transparent in the process.
The last method we’ll describe is the foreground selection method. This method is also a good choice for complex images that contain hair, grass, etc.
So that’s it for the five methods we’ve covered for now to remove background from images and photos using the free and open source GIMP tool. Let me know if this tutorial helped you to understand the steps and get the desired result.

GIMP is a popular free online photo editing application, but it does have its limitations – although anyone can remove backgrounds from images in GIMP, it’s still a bit complicated and time consuming.
Scroll to the end of this guide to see alternative ways to remove image backgrounds using powerful new applications, but for now let’s look at how to remove image backgrounds with GIMP.
Remove Photo Background Fully Automatically And Free
The Fuzzy Select tool (often called the Magic Wand tool because of its icon) works by selecting pixels with a similar color that you’ve sampled in a neighboring area.
This is by far the easiest way to remove a background with GIMP, and is best when there is a substantial color difference between the background and foreground.
Begin by right-clicking on the image layer to open its menu. Click on Add Alpha Channel here – this will allow you to keep the background transparent after removing the unwanted background.
Next, activate the Fuzzy Select tool. You can do this by clicking its icon (which looks like a magic wand) in the toolbar. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut by pressing the U key.

In the Tool Options panel, you’ll find various settings that allow you to customize the way the Fuzzy Select tool works. Make sure you have enabled Antialiasing and Draw Mask – the latter option enables a color overlay that shows what is currently selected.
Click on the background, drag the cursor up or down, and check the overlay to see how the selection was made.
When using the Fuzzy Select tool, the starting point makes a big difference. If this doesn’t work as expected, try clicking on a different point to deselect and start over.
You can also select in sections. Click and drag the tool until it starts selecting something you don’t want. Then slowly come back until you reach the end point where you feel satisfied and then leave.

Now click again near the edge of the previous selection to continue. I find this the most accurate way to select the entire background. Of course, this depends on each image and how many color gradients are in the background.
Since the Fuzzy Select tool only works on touch areas, you may find that part of the background remains unselected.
For example, check the space between the legs or arms if your subject is a person (as in the image above).
If you want the background of the image to be transparent, you’ll need an alpha channel. You can find this option by right-clicking on the image layer.

Activate the Select Foreground tool by clicking its icon in the toolbar. There is no keyboard shortcut for this.
Make sure you set the Engine to Matting Global in the Options panel, as Matting Levin seems to have a bug in several versions of GIMP.
The first step in selecting the foreground is to use the Free Selection tool—that’s why the cursor now has a lasso icon. So use it like this.
Click on a starting point and outline the foreground – you don’t need to worry about accuracy here. Continue drawing until you reach the starting point again.

Then click on Enter. You will now notice that your image is split into a dark blue background area and a light blue foreground area.
Note how the cursor changes to an icon; Now with the brush tool. This is because you now have to manually swipe across the object.
Again, no need to be very precise – but you should adjust the brush size to avoid painting over the background when you get close to the edges.
You can toggle the preview in the popup window on and off to see how it will look. If you are satisfied with the results, click Select.
How To Remove The Background Of Digital Images
You’ve now chosen your theme, but you’ll need to select the background to remove it. So go to the Select menu and choose Invert.
The Select by Color tool is especially useful if you have an image with a background of a single color without much variation in tone. Make sure that the object is not of the same color.
Start by right-clicking on the layer and choose Add Alpha Channel from the menu. This allows you to add transparency when you remove the background.
Click on the Pick by Color tool icon to activate it. You can also do this using the keyboard shortcut Shift + O.

Enable Antialiasing and Draw Mask (Layer Mask) in the Tool Options. If you want sharp edges, make sure you have disabled the Feather Edges option. Otherwise, leave it on.
You can adjust the threshold by moving it up or down. This will allow for more or less variation from the main color you choose.
Once you have made your selection, tap on the Remove button to remove the background. Or you can delete by going to the edit menu.
The last method I recommend for removing a background with GIMP isn’t the easiest, but it’s also the least complicated and the most accurate. If you’re familiar with Adobe Photoshop, the Paths tool can be compared to the Pen tool.
