Gimp White Background To Transparent – Sometimes you’ll want to take a photo of an item to use in a document or presentation so you don’t have a distracting background, or take a photo of your signature to add to a document without printing your signature. . Refile, sign and scan the document (losing the ability to index or search the document in the future).
Now you need to slightly adjust the curves to make the non-white background pure white. A better job of taking pictures on a well-lit white background requires fewer adjustments. In my example, white is like light gray:

Move the top layer until the background is pure white and highlight the main part by bending the middle of the elbow as shown below:

Now you can proceed to choose a color for the transparency. There is no need to add an alpha channel as you go.
By default it works fine on a white background as shown above. There are a few options to play with if you want. Just go ahead and click OK.
It also provides partial transparency to other parts of the image, in this case the composition itself. The purpose of creating a signature is good. If you don’t want this, you can make your choice by color or another method (lasso, magic wand…). See the reference on Stackexchange.
Now save the image in some image type that supports transparency (it won’t be JPG). I recommend PNG. to go

There are different ways to do this with GIMP, but I’ll cover the basic methods that are easiest to implement as a beginner. The method you should use depends on the type of image you’re working with and how comfortable you are using GIMP to convert backgrounds to transparency.

The first step is to choose a theme or background. The easiest one is the one you should choose. Also, check out the video tutorial at the top of the page where I show you how each of these works! Method 1: Fuzzy Selection Tool
According to the GIMP documentation, the Fuzzy Selection tool allows you to select areas of an image based on color similarity. This technique works well if the background of your photo is different from the subject you want to crop.

Grab the Blur Selection Tool by clicking the icon highlighted in the image above, or simply press the U key on your keyboard.
Click and drag the subject to make a selection with the Selection tool. Drag the cursor to the right to increase the size of the selection and to the left to decrease it. You can add them to your selection by Shift-clicking elsewhere, and you can remove unwanted selections by Control-clicking.

How Do I Prevent The Outline From Dipping Into An Image That Has Gaps Inside It?
A simple method similar to the Blur Selection Tool is the Color Selection Tool. When you click on a particular pixel with this tool, it creates a selection around it and all pixels of the same color. This tool works great if you have an image with a single color background and maybe some different shades.
Simply select by color by clicking on the icon highlighted above or by pressing Shift + O on your keyboard.
As mentioned earlier, simply click on the part of the image that contains the color you want to remove. You can increase the size of the selection by clicking and dragging to the right, or decrease it by clicking and dragging to the left. You can also select additional shades of the same color by holding down the Shift key and clicking on them.
It is a very skilled and time consuming method, but I think using GMP to remove background on transparency is the best method as it gives a very clean and professional result. This is the method used to crop the bird image in the title of this article – the Paths Tool.
Won’t Delete Selected Section
The Path tool allows you to create selections by manually placing smooth lines and curves using crosshairs. This is an ideal method to use when the subject and the background of your photo don’t have enough contrast for the previous methods to work.
Grab the Paths tool by clicking the icon shown above or using a keyboard shortcut.

The last method I offer is not necessarily a tool but a set of tasks. The idea behind this technique is to separate your image into black and white, then adjust the color curves to create contrast between the foreground and background. Once that’s done, we’ll use layer masks to define the transparent areas.
This method is suitable for cutting small details such as hair or hair. However, the 4 methods I understand are too complex, so it’s easier for me to explain via video…
Note that this method does not work for all images. There should be some contrast between the subject and the background.
The last method I will use is the foreground selection tool. This method is a good choice if your subject has very fine details, such as strands of hair.

To get started, grab the Foreground Selection Tool and draw an outline of your subject by hand. Don’t worry about accuracy, it’s designed for highly accurate searches. This will create a dark blue area on your back and a light blue area in front of you.
Now all you can do is brush the subject by hand, making sure you don’t get too close to the borders. You can increase and decrease the size of your brush using the left and right bracket keys. Again, don’t worry too much about whether or not this is a valid search. It can be simple, subjective.
