Gray Paint With Blue Undertones Benjamin Moore – Last time we talked about the bedroom, I revealed our new wallpaper ceiling. That wallpaper is really the jumping off point for the rest of the room. With the paper in hand, I can begin to imagine the rest of the space. I think the cream, gold and blue wallpaper looks bold, but since it’s on the ceiling and surrounded by a sea of white ceiling paint, it kind of gets lost. I know the new blue gray paint on the walls makes the wallpaper really pop!
First of all, I have to choose a new blue gray color for the walls and ceiling. We had some weird snow here in Chicago (it’s a crazy winter!) and of course, the day I was going to get some paint samples, we had a huge snow storm. However, I didn’t let that stop me! I put on my snow gear and went to the local Benjamin Moore store. Luckily, it’s only a few blocks away!

I brought a wallpaper sample with me to find a blue gray color that would complement it. Usually, if I want to find a paint color that matches a specific cabinet color, pattern, or other design element, I can have a paint store color chart. They put it under the scanner, and boom… you have your color! But because the blue in this wallpaper is so small, they can’t scan it to find an exact match. (Note: I later chatted with Erin, the wallpaper designer, and she told me the blue is Benjamin Moore, “Spring Blue.” Well, I’ve already painted the room. But if you want to match it in the future, now You Know !)

So my game plan was to look at the swatches and find light blues with warm undertones. I didn’t want it to read too purple and too cold. Instead, a light blue gray with some warmth is my ultimate goal! I looked at the swatches and brought four color swatches home with me to try on the walls.
I always like to draw my patterns directly on the wall and place them in several places around the room. I know some people paint panels or sample sheets and move them around the room, but I love seeing color on the walls. I never had a problem painting over swatches and seeing the original color underneath, so it worked well for me. The same thing happened in this project. I did not sand or prime the sample colors with this project. I painted right over them.
Looking at the swatches on the wall, I decided that Benjamin Moore ‘Boothbay Grey’ was perfect for me. Very purple, not too gray and with some warmth. yes yes yes!
Remember this recent blog post with common painting mistakes? I talked about how people usually don’t think about shine when choosing their color. Since I knew I was going to paint both the ceiling and the walls, I decided to go with two different polishes for the right color.
Best Light Blue Paint Colors For Any Room, According To Designers
For the ceiling, I went with matte because our ceiling has stains and I knew that being shiny would make them stand out more. For the walls I went with eggshell because I like a bit of glitter on the walls and it’s very durable. (Note: I also went with the best paint BM carries, which is their Aura line. I think the marks are inferior to the original paint. Get the best you can. I ended up using a gallon for it . Gallon for the walls. . and ceiling).
I chatted with the guy at the paint shop and asked him what was the best way to work with two different polishes of the same color. He said he would paint the ceiling first (two coats) and it didn’t matter if the mat overlapped the walls. Then, he said, cut the eggshell sheen into the ceiling and paint the walls normally. So that’s exactly what I did.
Before I start painting, I prepare the room. Finn and I got rid of the old mattress and box springs. I separated the headboard and the bed frame. And I cleaned all the dust bunnies hiding behind the furniture.
My Dyson vacuum cleaner, with the small attachment, is the perfect companion for removing all the dust on the plinths behind the furniture. It was good to keep the place clean! After all the dust was in, I removed the vents and vents and used painter’s tape around the windows and doors.

Then, finally, it was time to paint. I followed the paint clerk’s instructions…paint the ceiling first, then come down. I was too scared to glue around the wallpaper, I was afraid of tearing or twisting it, so I ended up just gently cutting the wallpaper. It took some time, but it was worth it.
I found that using a roller really helped me. I just have to go up the stairs to cut around the wallpaper. The rest of the roof and higher parts of the wall were made with rollers. This saved time, but the project still took me all day. My mom took Rory to her cousin’s house that day and they left at 8. I was cleaning when they came back at 5pm. It takes so long! I finished watching the whole season
Here is a view of my back looking up at the ceiling, as if I were lying in bed. Isn’t this great?! I’m so glad I took that paint color to the edges of the wallpaper because now it’s really the look of this room. It stands out and adds such a unique element to the design.
I used to think the black fan looked so bad against all the white and cream. Now, I think it works well with the new gray blue color. It contrasts well with the warm colors in the paint and wallpaper.
Designers Love Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray Paint—here’s Why
I took these photos in the morning after sunrise and they reflect the true color you see with this paint. It doesn’t read gray to me, instead, it’s very blue and sometimes a little green. I’m so glad I didn’t see purple in this tone!
The color changes a bit during the day, as many do, and I love it regardless of the light or time. Only the color is beautiful
Here I am sitting in this bedroom and I’m not crazy about it! This view never gets old, and soon I will be lying on our new king size bed looking at the new view here. I love it!
Now it’s time to start furnishing this place. The rug is from Lolovi (sneak peek above) and it’s gorgeous. It has a lot of green undertones and I think it complements the blue gray color very well. Next, I’ll talk about the new king size mattress I picked out and show off the new furniture in the space. Slowly but surely, we are getting there!

Here are my favorite blue-greys! These shades are the perfect way to keep a neutral color palette while still adding some color and personality to your space!
It’s no secret that I love decorating with blue. Most of our house is blue or blue green. But, I also agree that blue is too much for a wall color.
It is clear that blue-gray is somewhere between blue and gray. However, I think it’s more important to be blue than gray.

Gray is used to reduce the brightness of blue and make it calmer.
An easy way to enhance any light color on the walls (or all the walls in a room) is to choose a lighter shade.
For example, you might find a color you like on the color fan deck and instead choose a color two shades lighter in the same strip.
Another way to tone down the color is to choose a color with shades of gray. This makes the color look more “floral” and less bold and bright.
