Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl is a beautiful grey. But I’ll be honest, it looks more light blue than grey. Look at the image below. The curtains are heather gray. The Ikea blanket is a gray check box. Compare the walls if you don’t believe me. The pictures below are close to what they look like in real life.

When we originally painted this bedroom, I wanted a very neutral gray in the space. After reading a few reviews that said it was one of the best grays out there, I took their word for it. Boy, I wish I had painted a towel on my wall first!

Benjamin Moore’s gray owl is pale blue in color. So basically it’s gray with cool undertones.
This room was actually a small photography studio, so I really needed gray so I wouldn’t have a color cast on my subjects. After painting the place and realizing it was light blue (morning, afternoon, in all lights including interior lighting) I was disappointed.
But all is well. The universe can tell me things because the next year we had a little boy and the light blue tones were perfect for his nursery and the big nursery!
My lesson from my own mistake is this: make sure you paint your wall, especially if you’re looking for a gray wall color!

When choosing a gray wall, make sure you’re aware of gray undertones – make sure it’s green, brown, blue, or neutral. They have everything!
To get an idea of what I think is true gray, check out my post on my favorite gray – Benjamin Moore Honored Pewter. It is a warm gray with a deep gray undertone and is lighter than BM Gray Owl.
The Benjamin Moore line makes a gray owl. If you want a specific number, it’s Gray Owl 2137-60, and you’ll see it also known as Gray Owl OC52.
In my experience, the Benjamin Moore line is very hard to find in the Midwest. I often do color matching at my local Home Depot with the Behr Marquee line. If you do, be sure. The white base color can vary in shade from brand to brand so you can get swatches. So paint that test sample. That’s an extra $5 for a sample tin of paint!

The BM Gray Owl is definitely blue. Honestly, I think it’s a light blue! If you have gray furniture or anything with blue undertones, this would be a great color choice for your space.
I don’t see any undertones of green in our little boy’s north-facing nursery. I will say that the gray owl has no green that I can see.
The gray owl is classified as light gray. If your room doesn’t have much light and you use a lot of artificial light, it will definitely have a blue cast, but it will brighten the room. On a sunny day with the windows closed, the walls are stunning.
I would say yes! We have white dove on the upholstery in the children’s playroom and I think the two colors go well together. A white dove is a true white dove in my eyes.

The gray owl has many suitable colors. Remember it has a cool feel to it, so I tend to go with blues in this case. Here’s something from Benjamin Moore that really fits Gray Owl:

Honestly, all the big brands usually have colors that are most popular to the other brands in their system (this is certainly true of Home Depot). I can tell them the color and they match it on the spot! I’m not sure if Sherwin Williams has an equivalent, but most stores do a pretty good job of matching the paint color to the original brand. I prefer Behr because it is convenient. Their marquee line is amazing – the color is so easy to apply. If you find a Benjamin Moore supplier, be sure to select them first before matching colors!
I will say that I have different colors in the main areas of our house and they are very different at different times of the day! I seem to have different colors in each of these areas. Natural light is beautiful (especially for me as a photographer), but it can make your walls look very different from room to room, especially in gray!

If you’re looking for a neutral gray without an undertone, I’d say Gray Owl might not be the neutral paint color for you (seriously, check out my Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter review). If I could do it all over again, I would definitely paint the nursery this color. We didn’t want to do too much work if this color could work in the room (and it did).

Compared to similar grays, the gray owl has a green color, while others are usually blue or brown.
In lighting that accentuates those blue tones, gray owl can appear as a refreshing neutral. Lots of natural light and blue accents in carpets or furniture will further emphasize the blue.
Conversely, green undertones can help gray owls achieve a cozy and warm look when paired with earthy tones. Combined with dark gray, you’ll see that the green stands out without looking muddy.
