Grey With A Purple Undertone – This year, as part of my 2019 New Year’s resolutions, I decided it was time to get back into blogging. I was surprised I hadn’t touched it since 2012! I have overselected paint colors and interior decor for hundreds of clients. But now that I’m writing a book on how to choose paint colors, I’m now focusing on writing more.

Just when I stopped writing was when “Grey Train” hit the mark and gray became the new beige. Pretty much every house I’ve done is Fifty Shades of Grey. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I like the way it looks, and I especially like that it hides stains and scratches, but it’s very unpredictable. I know I’m late posting about gray, but I see a lot of misinformation on the internet, so I thought I’d set the record straight with some color.

Grey With A Purple Undertone

I am not an interior designer, I am a color consultant and have worked in a Benjamin Moore store for 11 years. I have selected thousands of colors for clients and customers. I am very familiar with BenjaminMoore colors and have been featured on their website as one of their paint color experts. In fact, interior designers come to me asking what colors I should use, because I have a lot of experience with them and have seen certain paint colors many times. I know which colors work and which don’t. So I thought I’d share my thoughts on gray.

Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray Paint Color

First let’s take a look at a video I made back in 2013. First off, I’ll warn you that it’s not a professional video, not even close! It was randomly picked up on my iPhone one day while I was working in the store. Then I went to my client and she took my phone while I was recording. The audio isn’t great, so turn the audio all the way up before watching. It’s low quality, but good information and over 40,000 views! I’ve tried to make it as simple as possible and there are only two colors to speak of. Stoneton Gray and Revere Pewter.

Warm gray contains beige and cool gray is more like a silver gray. This is clearly demonstrated when you look at Stonington Gray HC-170 being cold and Revere Pewter HC-172 being warm.

Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray (lighter) are what I call the perfect “transition color”. If you have beige furniture and just want to update the room, these colors will go well with all your beige furniture. Whenever I’m called upon to pick a color for what I like to call the “Tuscan kitchen” (cherry inverted cabinets and beige granite), the first colors I pick are Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray. There’s enough beige to look great next to the spilled marble, but they’re also attractive enough to give the room a more modern look.

If you look closely, you’ll see almost a drop of yellow in these colors, so they’re ideal for yellow rooms. I’ve noticed that Revere Pewter tends to look too dark in most small spaces, so I tend to use Edgecomb Gray 80% of the time. The downside to Revere is that it tends to look green next to anything with a slight pink tint.

Stoneton Gray is an excellent cool gray. It’s a great gray, but I’ve seen it turn blue, green, and blue-green. It’s my favorite color for children’s rooms and goes really well with navy blue and red. I love using it with a navy blue accent wall.

Now on to the other grays. As everyone got on the gray bandwagon and the years went by, I did more and more house remodels and got new furniture. So I find myself using Revere Pewter less and less. It’s too beige with most new things. Let’s talk about the colors I use most often now.

On the right side you will see a band with Silver Bells 1458 that looks a little purple. I rarely use it unless it matches something in the room (I’ve seen a lot of bathroom tiles go well with it) or if it’s the room, I really want a little lavender flower scent. 99% of the time, I’ll pull that silver bell out of the mix.

Second stripe from the left you will see a stripe with Horizon 1478 and Alaskan Husky 1479. This is a silver gray stripe that works well with the Carrara marble. If the Stoneton Gray looks too dark or too heavy, I remove the tape. But with Stoneton, those colors can turn blue. (The horizon also reappears in the OC color.) When I’m looking for a true gray that doesn’t turn blue, I remove this band from the mix.

Warm Gray Paint Colors That Everyone Can Love

On the left side you will see Classic Gray 1548, Balboa Mist 1549, Cumulus Cloud 1550, Paloma Gray 1551.

The fourth band has Light Pewter 1464 (it’s a bit more beige than the others) Nimbus 1465, Smoke Embers 1466, Baltic Gray 1467.

For a lighter gray, switch to Off White OC Color. Here you’ll see Classic Gray and Balboa Fog reappear as OC-23 and OC-27. I also like Silver Satin OC-26 and Collingwood OC-28.

Other cool grays like Sterling 1591 and Graytint 1611 can look really nice, but can look light blue in most rooms. If you like blue and find it a little blue, that’s not a bad thing.

Picking The Perfect Shade Of Gray

These are cool gray bands. I put Nimbus next to it so you can see how big they are in comparison. Most of them look great with gray marble, but they can turn blue.

Gray Owl OC-52 is a color that seems to pop up a lot on the internet (although I don’t know why!). The color is GREEN. It comes from the gray/green section of the Color Preview section and is also known as 2137-60. I only use it when I want a true bluish gray (which I hardly ever do). If your light is pink and the gray is too pink, you might want to try Gray Owl because there is definitely some gray in your light.

When I want a dark charcoal gray, my “choice” is Cinder AF-705 from the Affinity Collection. It’s a nice neutral gray with no beige or blue. I love it in the bathroom and the laundry/mud room has all white furniture. Adds a nice dramatic touch. If I were using a warmer gray like Revere and wanted a darker gray I would go for Chelsea Gray HC-168 or Kendall Charcoal HC-166.

So how do you know which color to use? Well, I always match anything in the room. If it’s a bathroom, I put chips on the brick and see which gray works best.

My Favorite Shades Of Gray

If it’s a bedroom, I’d look at it next to the headboard or bedding. If it’s the living room, I look at it next to the sofa.

I recently went to a newly built house that was painted the same gray color throughout the house. But it looks green everywhere because the color doesn’t go well with any of the tiles. The bathroom has a slightly purple hue that makes the walls look green. I fixed it with Metro Gray in the bathroom. The kitchen cabinets have more tape colors so we had to use tape in the kitchen and family room to fix it. My point is, you can’t force a color to work if it doesn’t work with your business.

You can’t tell from the photo because the filters have bleached the photo. But directly the walls have a green tone next to the brick has a burgundy tone. They just don’t go together. By placing paint chips on the brick, you can easily choose the right shade of gray. Subway Grey.

Lighting is an important factor that will affect the appearance of colors. I learned from a photographer that daylight is GREEN. So if you have a lot of daylight, the colors in your painting will be cooler and bluer.

The light can be pink or yellow, and the new LEDs have a cool blue hue. It will affect the color. So be sure to test your colors in your lighting. How it looks in the store is not how the color will look in your home. While we’re on the subject, a color that looks great on your friend’s house might not look the same on yours. Their interiors are different as well as their lighting.

When swatching, DO NOT place swatches directly over the old color. You won’t be able to tell what the new color will look like. old color
