How To Build A Bookcase With Adjustable Shelves
Hello cute bookcases for small homes! I admit I was a little bold with the mustard yellow coating, but it’s DIY fun, you can paint your piece any color you like. In addition to the expressive color, there are sturdy, stable and wide shelves that will accommodate and display everything.

And the icing on the cake is the adjustable shelf, made possible by Kreg’s secret shelf tool. See those nice, evenly spaced holes on the inside of the shelf? They are the perfect size for shelf pins. And you can incorporate dowel holes into your next project with a dowel rack jig.
After making the furniture (I recommend waiting at least until the frame is in place) you can drill holes for the pins in the shelves. I prefer to wait for it to finish, as I don’t want the paint to seep into the poster holes on the shelf. To use a shelf fixing jig you will need a piece of wood cut to fit the shelf space, this is called a story stick.
As long as the carcass is square, you can be almost certain that the mounting pin will be perfectly flush with the jig. It is truly a life saver and takes your DIY furniture to the next level.
Now my son has room for all his books. I originally tore out the tacky old furniture in her bedroom and replaced it with a shaker-style dresser that deprived her of bookshelves. As a result, she needed a bookshelf for her bedroom, and this piece of furniture solves that problem.

Finally, I decided to paint this bookcase in Benjamin Moore’s Glen Ridge Gold Advance in a satin finish. Then I sanded the exposed edges and painted the Varathane Region only on the edges.
But my favorite design choice on this shelf is the tongue-and-groove support. I actually have some wood left over from building the sliding barn doors for this room. I love the big indentation it creates in the background and the classic home feel it creates.

To make the pocket holes for this build, I used my Kreg K4. This is a great pocket punch tool which is very portable and user friendly.
How To Install Wall Mounted Shelves
In step 4, you will attach the shelf to one of the side panels using the pocket holes. I made these racks so that the carcass and the rack are 12 inches wide to make it easier to rip the boards together.
Above is the finished frame with finishing before adding tongue and groove arms. For this project, you will need pocket plugs that can be installed before or after the support is put into operation.

So I want adjustable shelves. But I don’t want something with pegs and pins. Or metal scrap. Everything is very functional but I thought they would make things look very modern and modern.
We had an old bureau we bought for the Library that turned out to be an inch too wide – we knew it might be close, but it was too good. It will end up in the living room. However, this one has adjustable shelves and we used them as inspiration to add some old school furniture techniques to the Library bookcase. We’ve noticed in a few previous posts that I’m – actually – terrible at blogging, so here I’m telling you that you should take my word for it. The table is beautiful. It has adjustable shelves. They are similar to the ones we created for Libraries. And I don’t have any suitable photos to prove it as the desk is way up in the top room which acts as storage and too many boxes in front of it to get a good picture. I’m actually worse.

I will continue to use my name in everything, but now I can speak with more authority. The rack system we use for our tables is called a Sawtooth Rack System. There are a few posts on the internet about them (see HERE, HERE and HERE), which I found now that I’ve built them all. So that’s fun! The production of this type of furniture was popular before the industrial revolution. (Spoiler alert: we used ALL FACTORY REVOLUTION to make our own. Don’t get too excited.)

Build Your Own Mid Century Modern Shelving Unit
First we had to do the “Sawtooth” – or as I call it, “Tooth” part. To make it, we started with a thin strip of 3/8-inch plywood.
Doug installs a pile of saws and dado. What appears to be illegal in some countries? Not at this point, so we’re all good. WHAT? Again, I didn’t know about something until I sat down to write a blog post. WHO KNOWS.
We cut four at a time. You will need a set of four for each shelf box. Cutting it into piles of four means each square will be the same inside. If they’re a few millimeters apart, that’s fine, because each square can’t be identical. This video shows MUCH more clearly how cutting works. This is done the length of the cut and for a total of four sets.
After cutting it, I had to paint it. They were rough to paint, but I made them a bit rougher by painting the inside red first. It helps. But actually drawing all angles is bad, so just turn on a fun movie or audiobook and play it all the way through.

An example is the cold type. I was worried it would look too rough, but it looks good.
They’re not that bad to draw, but I still recommend making a party. It’s still VERY BORING.
