After the old mortar is removed, dust the brick cavity joints using a broom or compressed air. Prepare the joints for new grout by lightly sanding them with a garden hose.
Using only the amount of water specified by the manufacturer, slowly add water and mix the cement boat mortar until it is the consistency of peanut butter and tacky enough to stick with an inverted trowel. It should be firm but not crumbly. Allow the grout to “rest” for 10 minutes while it absorbs the water, then stir again using a brick towel. Do not try to revive dry mortar by adding more water. Mix a new batch.
Repointing A Brick Chimney
The basic steps for starting brick mortar are: Pour the mortar onto an inverted brick towel, hold the mortar under the smooth joints—tighten the brick—and sweep 1/4-in. Mortar screws into the hole using a 3/8-in. broad petal flat. Fill the horizontal seams first. Avoid getting the mortar on the brick surface.
Apply a small amount of grout to the back of the brick trowel, holding the tip of the trowel in the vertical joints and along the horizontal joints of the brick, then sweep and seal the grout into the hole with a pointed towel.
Before finishing grouting, determine which joints match the existing joints using Figure A. Next, purchase the necessary grout finishing tools to match the shape and depth of the existing grout joints. We recommend that brick floors and other horizontal brick surfaces (corners, wall surfaces, etc.) be lined with clearance joints to promote drainage—regardless of the type of grout joints in your vertical walls. Allow the grout to harden to an “inch” hardness before finishing the joints. Before working on the long vertical joints, design the vertical joints.
