I understand the basics of cleaning a fireplace, but not the details of cleaning nearly 100-year-old soot brick. This stove is from 1929 so I don’t want to spend hard money as it is not in good condition. The bomb rotted in some places, and no one noticed it, but not only.

How To Clean A Fireplace

After a lot of research and trial and error, I figured out how to clean it. So today, Friday the 5th, I’ll tell you how to clean the oven in five steps – all in one place, so you don’t have to read everything! At the end of the post, I’ll look at other cleansers that people recommend.

If you only use your oven, cool it first. Make sure there are no ashes or wood to cool the fireplace. You don’t want to start a fire and burn yourself!

If you find that the oven is cold (or if you don’t use an oven like mine), remove any large pieces or ash from the oven. Our fireplaces have some wood (just for show), a scrap pile, a pine cone (not sure how that got there?) and some pine nuts that have fallen over time. Remove those items first with a scraper or scraper and place them in the trash. I find that paper towels work best for this because it prevents the bucket from standing up and opening the trash. Every little minute is taken up by the shop-vac (you can use a regular vacuum cleaner for this, but you have to clean it afterwards or the oven will smell for a while).

Get a bowl – a small bowl that cleans well, here’s the best – and add the cleaning solution. First add a cup of baking soda to the bowl. Then, add the washing up liquid – enough baking soda, a quarter to a half cup – and stir until you get something about the thickness of the dough.

I used three sets of these for the entire fireplace, but let me tell you – it hasn’t been cleaned since 1929! It’s so dirty!

Go to this section of optional gloves. With gloves on, take a handful of the broth and place it on the wall of the fireplace. like this:

The paste stays on the surface for a while. About half an hour. Forty-five minutes is a long time. If we go farther, there won’t be much noise.

Then push – while wearing gloves (trust me!) – and tap the soot off the rock or stone. This requires a little elbow grease, but the brush does most of the work here. Otherwise, you’ll have plenty of weapons (yes, trust me).

Take paper towels and place two layers on the floor of the oven. Then, take the bottle with water spray and wash off the slurry + dirt. (If the waste bottle has two exits, choose one that can be cleaned through the drain.) The waste bottle acts like a mini vacuum cleaner, dissolving soot, dirt, and slurry!

But it’s not a quick job. The soot covered fireplace was studied over three days from the first sketch to the final painting. No, not kidding. Please don’t let us fool you. But like God.

A hearth ring is located around the hearth due to the brass insert found earlier.

For this part, Mr. Pure Magic Eraser! Just wet and clean the brick.

However, this baking soda solution does not work well on clay paints. The magic eraser worked great!

Once the stove is as clean as you can get and the surface is as smooth as you can get, it’s time to paint!

Seal the brick first to make sure it can’t be painted over. Make sure the tape is not just on the edges, but between the bead lines so the paint doesn’t show through.

They are painted black for two reasons. First, if someone wants to fix and use this stove, the fire is ready. Second, I wanted true black in there, so the fireplace is gone. I used a wide brush (3-inch) for different surfaces and paint types.

Warning: The paint has a slight smell. Make sure to use it in a well-ventilated area and/or open a window.

Then I added my DIY fireplace cabinet and now my fireplace matches the 1929 house!

When I started cleaning the oven, I googled other people cleaning the oven. Thoughts and feelings include:

I have to tell you that this oven is old and rotten and I haven’t tried any harsh chemicals because I don’t want to make it worse. I tried salt and vinegar and it didn’t work. I also tried several cleaners – the spray type and the grout cutter – and none of them worked to remove the foam from the oven or sides.

And I was surprised that the slurry didn’t make painted clay. Magic Eraser made it easy and simple (just one Magic Eraser).
