An old blanket or sheet works well – just be prepared to get dirty. Place it in front of the fireplace before cleaning. We say this for several reasons. The first is to control your distractions! You don’t want to get any ash or anything on those carpets or hardwood floors. Second, you won’t lose them when assembling the fireplace so it’s a great place to put glass and other parts.
Your gas fireplace has a tempered or ceramic glass cover on the front of the fireplace. It is usually removed in a few different ways. Many new fireplaces have compression joints that open when rotated. Some older units have screws that hold the glass in place. The best way to find out how your particular model works is to check your owner’s manual (you know, the one we never told you to throw away?). There should be detailed instructions for removing the glass cover.

Now that you can get behind the glass and into the fireplace, we can start cleaning.
Starting with the glass, take a glass fireplace cleaner. Do not, repeat do not use Windex or any ammonia based glass cleaner. These products are not intended for use in these extreme heat and carbon build-up conditions and may cause adverse effects (e.g. permanent rainbow) when used.
Follow the instructions on the cleaner and wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth – don’t use a paper towel.
After the glass is clean, you can use a vacuum or brush and dust pan to remove loose dust and carbon. You can also open the front panel where your pilot and battery receiver are usually located and clean out any cobwebs and dust bunnies.

Before cleaning a gas fireplace, turn off the gas valve, which is usually on the wall near the fireplace. Take the gas logs and clean them with a soft bristle paint brush. If there are lava rocks at the bottom of your chimney, spread them out on an old towel and use a brush or vacuum hose attachment to vacuum up the loose dirt. If you’re worried about accidentally sucking up stones, place a piece of gauze over the vacuum nozzle and secure it with a rubber band. Before putting the logs and stones back, vacuum the inside of the chimney. Spray a fireplace-safe glass cleaner onto a dry cloth and buff it over your fireplace glass in small, circular motions. Wipe the inner edges of the chimney with a cloth dampened in clean water to remove stubborn dirt. If the exterior of the fireplace is heavily soiled, clean it with a soft cloth dampened in water and mild dish soap. When you’re done, put the stones, logs, and glass cover back in place. Wait for all wet areas to dry before starting a new fire. If you want to know how to clean the exterior of a gas fireplace, keep reading!
