We are redoing the wall around the fireplace. It has ugly pink wood paneling and a small fireplace. We demolished the wooden formwork and installed plasterboard. We then painted the walls around the fireplace a nice shade of white. I love it. The only problem is that the soot, smoke marks and dirt on the fireplace brick are really visible. The fireplace itself looks terrible against our new clean wall. (One home improvement project always seems to lead to another).

Some of the bricks are a little harder to access if they are surrounded by wood, so I wanted to clean the bricks before installing the fireplace. So I tried cleaning with just about every cleaner I had. Soap, water, Ajak, magic eraser, degreaser, bleach solution, etc. (I tried them in an inconspicuous place because they can damage the brick). Nothing happened. Nothing took away the darkness.

There are two problems with cleaning the oven. First, soot and smoke residue are oil-based, so they don’t clean as well as most water-based household cleaners. I saw houses where the owners were trying to paint over the smoke stained walls. Bad idea. The stain runs through the water-based paint.

Second, brick is very porous, so most cleaners get into the pores of the brick and stay there. Dirt remains on the brick and is difficult to remove with cleaning agents.

After many fruitless searches on Google and Pinterest, I asked my chimney sweep for advice on cleaning the wall. He advised. And it worked! This is how I cleaned the fireplace brick.

How To Clean Brick

I cleared three bricks at once. I give the brick a few sprays of Speedy White cleaner and then let it sit for a few minutes.

Then I started washing. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed those three bricks for at least 5 minutes. It foamed, and then the white foam gradually turned gray. Sometimes, if the foam decreases, add a little more detergent.

After a long cleaning, the foam was removed with a wet cloth. All the oil and dirt get into the foam, so it’s important to wipe it off. I washed the cleaning cloth and wiped the bricks again. Again, as long as there is no dirt or foam on the cleaning cloth.

In the end, all black stains from soot and smoke were removed. All the dirt from the oven is gone! The brick looks clean and almost new.

I have to admit that there were a few spots that the cleaner didn’t remove. There are dried spots from the previous owner. The cleaner didn’t affect them at all. There are also round black dots like candle drops. Luckily they are small and not too noticeable as I have yet to figure out how to remove them. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
