How To Keep Wood Floors Clean
Vacuuming: The easiest way to remove clumps of dust from your floor is with a vacuum cleaner. We recommend the O-Cedar Dual Action Flip Mop.

Broom and pan, or vacuum cleaner: Use one of these to remove piles of debris from the floor and place them in the trash. A good angled broom can get into corners and under heavy furniture better than a vacuum cleaner. Alternatively, a good set of vacuum cleaners for exposed environments can do the same job.
Mop and bucket: If you are working with wooden floors, it is important not to let the water sit for too long. It can even leak through the material under the floor or warp the wood itself. A microfiber string mop and a twist bucket will spread the cleaning solution evenly over the floor without creating excess moisture.
Cleaning liquids: Specialty detergents such as Method or Pledge work well here, as do simple solutions of water and liquid soap. Avoid cleaners with corrosive ingredients such as bleach or vinegar, and never abrasive cleaners such as baking soda. Also, do not use products that add gloss or shine to the floor. If you want to refinish hardwood floors in the future, applying a hardwood floor can be difficult, says Brett Miller of the National Hardwood Flooring Association.
Spray bottle: It is much easier to spread the cleaning solution evenly on the floor with a spray bottle than with a mop. This method also helps prevent excess moisture. Anything from a small trigger bottle to a very large ZEP Pro spray will do.

The timing depends on how much floor space you have and how much furniture and carpeting needs to be removed. It takes about 30 minutes to clean the 132 square foot hardwood floors in the living room. I vacuum for about 10 minutes every few days to remove dust, but once a month is more intensive, do a thorough cleaning.
First, remove any loose furniture or rugs from the floor and sweep away any debris or dust. Use a mop and broom or vacuum cleaner for this step. But make sure your vacuum is set to the floor setting so the brush doesn’t spin and scratch your floor.
Then spray the cleaning solution on the floor to cover the areas you want to clean. Soak the mop in a bucket of water and wring it out well. Use a mop to spread the freshly sprayed solution over the floor. Not to get more water out of the bucket.
How To Clean Hardwood Floors Naturally
Use a damp mop to spread the cleaning solution in broad, light strokes over the floor, occasionally squeezing out excess water. The goal is to spread the cleaning agent thinly over the floor so that it dries quickly and easily.
It’s a good idea to patch a large floor by starting at one end of the room and working backwards to avoid going through the section you just mopped.
Note: Do not use steam cleaners on wooden floors. This will almost certainly introduce moisture into the cracks in the floor, which can warp the board.
Once the floor is covered, wring out the mop, empty the bucket and let the floor air dry for about 15-20 minutes. Replace all floor coverings and furniture when the floor is dry. Do not pull table and chair legs to avoid scratching the floor.

New hardwood floors, or old hardwood floors that have been refinished, can add a beautiful accent to your home. But they are also huge investments.
Tips For Maintaining Unfinished Wood Flooring
A few simple care tips can make this investment last longer. Here’s how to keep your hardwood floors looking good long after you’ve installed or refinished them.
Hardwood needs to be swept once a day and cannot be cut with a regular sweeper. Invest in a dust mop such as the O-Cedar Dual-Action Microfiber Sweeper (the one I use). These mops have a wide head that picks up dust without micro-scratching your floor.
Always push the wiper in one direction and turn it to rotate. Do not lift the mop head from the floor until the job is done. Lifting the mop prematurely releases dust and lint into the air, requiring you to re-mop the area you just finished. I learned this trick while cleaning gym floors as a school janitor.
When you’re done, you’ll have a load line that the wipers rest on. Use a small brush and a microfiber pan to pick it up.
Tips To Help Prevent Scratches On Wood Floors
Then put the end of the mop in the garbage bag. Close the opening of the bag around the handle with your hand and give the mop a good shake to remove any trapped dust or debris.
It may go against what you’ve been taught about housekeeping, but don’t use a wet mop or steam mop on hardwood floors. According to the National Wood Flooring Association, moisture can damage the finish, it can even damage the wood after a while.
Instead, use a cleaning agent intended for wooden floors. Many of these products are formulated for different types of floor surfaces, so be sure to read the label before purchasing.
Carefully follow the instructions on the bottle when cleaning. It is generally recommended that floors are only cleaned with cleaning agents once a month.
How To Clean Wood Floors And Remove Stains For A Polished Look
Keeping wooden floors clean is more than just cleaning them properly. In addition, you should take some precautions.
Remove spills and other moisture immediately to prevent damage to the wood. A damp cotton or microfiber cloth is best for spot cleaning.
Consider applying a UV coating to the windows in your home. UV light can bleach parquet over time, leaving faded spots in areas that receive the most sunlight.
Finally: pointy things are bad. For example, don’t walk around the floor in high heels. Pointed heels can leave stains in the wood. Furniture legs can also mark or scratch, so be sure to put a felt floor protector on the bottom of each leg. Do you want your floors to shine? Getting a properly clean floor isn’t hard, especially if you’re ahead of the curve. Place a hard brush mat, keep dirty boots and shoes by the door and sweep, mop or vacuum frequently. I’ll call
Flooring contractor Michael Dittmer, who lives in the suburbs of Chicago, sends a robot vacuum to monitor the entire first floor every day. “Then I clean the kitchen floor every week and the other rooms twice a month.” Of course he has a garden, a dog and a teenage boy. This regimen should work well for most families.
For neutral solutions, a pH value of about 7 or equivalent for cured poly is required. High is too basic. Low is good for an all-purpose cleaner, but not here. One example is Bona’s free and easy parquet vacuum cleaner ($18; Bona).
Do not use vinegar or baking soda solution. Old-fashioned remedies, including vinegar and dish soap, can’t do the same job as today’s all-purpose solutions and can actually damage or dull the polyurethane.
