Duff and her husband decided to paint the upper cabinets white and the lower cabinets charcoal gray, which, she says, is “very trendy right now.”
He began by thoroughly cleaning the wood with TSP cleaner (a heavy duty product designed for previously painted surfaces). Next came a very sticky primer, then paint. The whole process takes about a week to ensure adequate drying between coats. Once dry, Duff applied clear silicone cabinet stopper to the back of each door to prevent paint from sticking and peeling.
“All in all, we spent about $300 on everything,” he says. And when do gray and white cabinets go out of style? “We can paint them again!”

At age 25, Ebony Stephenson, a kitchen and bath designer in Virginia, “used very little money” when renovating the kitchen in her first home. Oak cabinets with a classy construction are not the sleek, modern look they want. So he found a winning formula that was simple and cheap.
Stephenson removed all the upper cabinet doors and took them to a carpenter who cut out a center panel for each door (a handy DIYer can do this at home). The wood was replaced with tempered glass ordered from an automotive glass company. (You may also want to check the shower door and the mirror.)
After sanding and trimming the doors, he painted them true black to match his black hardware. Finally, he put himself in the glass, put his tools in it, and built his beautiful new cabinets.

Stephenson says he spent $50 to $100 on all eight doors, and $300 on the glass. The new, nickel plated ones from the local thrift store were $20. The result? Stephenson thinks they are worthless.

Ways We Saved Big On Our Frugal Kitchen Remodel
We are in the process of building our Hacienda Sanctuary kitchen, and I have spent the last year gathering dream inspiration to take my designs to the next level. I thought it would be fun to share with you the best ideas I found – almost all of which I will incorporate into future plans.
No spoilers here – a new coat of paint is always the best bang for your buck. Many cabinet surfaces can also be painted with high quality and unique paint. I have had good results with Benjamin Moore Advance and Sherin Williams Urethane Enamel, both made for cabinets and highly recommended by professional/DIYers.
If you don’t want to change the entire color, try painting the upper cabinets, the floor or the island. Showing a second color will add visual interest, and help the room feel different. Also, using a few shades lighter or darker than your existing cabinets will give your kitchen a traditional feel.

How Much Does Cabinet Refacing Cost? A Budgeting Guide (2023)
A quick fix that can go a long way in changing the look of your cabinets. Hardware is the ‘jewel’ of your kitchen, so you can add personality here!
Today, there are endless options at every price point, perfect for every design. This is a place where you don’t have to find something that looks and sounds great. Sites like Amazon, Lowe’s and Home Depot and even Etsy have a great selection of cheap cabinets (these are some of the best finds on a budget).
Options 1 and 3 are easy, but they limit your options. Option 2 requires additional work. You can choose a style of bar handle like this one that covers the old hole.
Pro Tip: Use a cabinet jig to drill the right holes and save time! We use the following tools in our installation:
White Kitchen Remodel
This is the biggest investment on this list (both in time and dollars), but you can see that it’s important to make a big impression. If you are happy with the overall layout of your kitchen, but have old or damaged doors, it is worth looking into renovating your cabinets.
There are many companies (both local and online) that make fixed and hinged doors that fit existing cabinets. With a little modification, you can even upgrade your doors to drawers, which are often a great use of space.

If it is not possible to replace your doors/drawers, consider replacing them with moldings. This is one of my favorite DIY ideas for doors of any kind (see my easy DIY door lift tutorial).

This method is good for simple slab or shaker doors if you want to take them to another location. We upgraded our Shaker closet doors with leather hinges for a sleek, traditional look. The magic is in the details!

Another idea to consider: Add molding to the bottom of your cabinet boxes for a more polished look.
Cabinet finishes are another (often overlooked) opportunity to update your kitchen. This can be a simple DIY with shapes, or a thin cover like beadboard.
