Paper, you have a mixed bag on your hands. Fortunately, Carolyn Forte, director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Preservation Institute, has some tips on how to remove these colored wax marks from clothing, furniture and other items.
How To Get Crayon Off The Wall
If the pencil is soft, freeze it by placing an ice cube wrapped in a small plastic bag, then wipe off the excess. Place the stain between clean paper towels and press with a warm iron to transfer the stain to the paper towels. Change the towel frequently to absorb more pencil and prevent the stain from transferring to other areas of the fabric. Pre-treat with a stain remover such as Shout Advanced Gel. Apply and dry. Wash with a bleach suitable for the fabric. If any color remains, re-wash the product using a chlorine bleach such as Clorox Regular Bleach (if it is fabric-safe) or an oxygen bleach such as biokleen Oxygen Bleach.
If that doesn’t work, place the stain on paper towels, spray it with WD-40, and let it sit for a few minutes. Turn the cloth over and spray again with WD-40. Use a dishwashing liquid such as Dawn Ultra Liquid Dish Soap and rub it onto the stain. Change the paper towels as they absorb the stain. Wash with chlorine bleach (if it is fabric-safe) or oxygen bleach and the hottest water for the fabric. Wash in warm water.
“If pencils accidentally get on clothes, you can get pencil stains,” says Forte. To treat this, wash the clothes with warm water, detergent and a glass of baking soda. If color remains, wash with chlorine bleach (if fabric-safe) or pre-treat and soak with oxygen bleach using the hottest fabric-safe water. Soak for at least 30 minutes, then rinse.
If the pencil is soft, freeze it as you would with clothing. Using a clean white cloth, blot the stain with a dry cleaning solvent, such as Guardsman Professional Strength Dry Cleaning Liquid Stain Removal Solvent ($50, amazon.com). Apply until the solvent is absorbed. Repeat until the stain is gone. If that doesn’t work, try the WD-40 method above.

If the pencil is soft, freeze it as you would with clothing. Cover the stain with a clean white cloth and press with the tip of a hot iron. Repeat using a clean part of the fabric until all the wax has transferred from the carpet to the fabric. If a colored stain remains, wipe the stain with a dry cleaning solvent. If that doesn’t work, try the WD-40 method above.
To remove crayon from the wall, use a cloth towel dry cleaner to safely remove marks from almost any surface (except vintage wallpaper).
If pencil stains get on the dryer, spray a soft cloth with WD-40 and wipe the drum. Blot the stain with a damp, heavy cloth and rinse with a damp cloth. Run several dry cloths through the drying cycle to ensure the drum is clean.
