Now it was time to turn our attention to our vintage maple kitchen cabinets. We knew when we bought the house that we wanted new cabinets, but we didn’t realize how expensive new cabinets could be. From our budget.

After months of research, we decided to paint them ourselves. It was more work than we expected, but the cabinets turned out great and saved us a lot of money. We all have to put in some good old fashioned hard work, elbow grease, lots of patience and, of course, that special cabinet paint, but more on that later. I wish I had taken more photos, but I was usually up to my elbows in paint and dust and couldn’t hold my phone!
How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets Step By Step

Painting cabinets is a very messy business. Instead of doing everything in the kitchen, we set up a work station in our garage with a drop cloth and drove the car for a few weeks. We had old folding tables and horses that we used to put stuff on. We also put a plastic sheet over all the cleaning stuff.
And I mean everything! Plates, bowls, silverware etc. fill in And remove them from the equation. Not having these things was a pain in the rear, especially with two young children but they were absolutely necessary. If possible, you should remove any interior shelves.
Our first step is to remove the cabinet doors and hardware. IMPORTANT: You must number each door and place its hardware in plastic bags. We’ve learned the hard way that doors and cabinets don’t look good if they’re replaced if they don’t fit. Any hardware left behind should be covered with blue painter’s tape.

Before painting, you need to clean everything you are going to paint. They don’t look “dirty” in nature, but all kitchen cabinets have dirt from cooking. We used something known as a crude cleaner for pre-paint cleaning. I suggest using gloves and goggles to avoid skin irritation. Cleaning was a long and tedious process but all part of the journey. The cleaning included not only what we removed, but all the cabinetry on the wall.
Now that everything is clean, it’s time to paint everything you’re going to paint. We checked with our local hardware store and they recommended 120 grade sandpaper to help absorb the primer properly. It’s handy to have a powerful vacuum nearby to suck up dust. We bought this little vacuum for this kitchen project. Trust me, buy it. Sand is light.
This is a good time to fill any cracks, holes or other imperfections in the wood with Elmer’s Wood Filler.
We used the highly recommended Benjamin Moore Advance Primer. Many professionals use paint soaps. We considered renting it but were intimidated by its horsepower. Instead, we did it the old fashioned way with 2 ½ inch fine bristles.

You have to paint everything – doors, drawers and cabinets. There was a steep learning curve and mistakes along the way but we were fast learners. We edited all the locations 2x because we weren’t happy with what we saw after the first round. It may have been overkill but we wanted to do it right. Also, for any interior painting, you have plastic on your counters, drips on the floor, etc. We let each side cure for 24 hours before flipping over and pressing the other side. A terrifying process that tested the limits of our marriage…
Now it was time to paint. We used satin white cabinet paint. Again, we decided on three quotes. A gallon covers 400-500 square feet. We could have gone with just two coats after two coats of primer but we played it safe. We used the same brush style. Everything that was taken out was painted in the garage. Everything else had to be painted in the kitchen.
Once everything was painted and dried, it was time to restore all the doors, drawers and hardware. It took us longer than expected to get everything set up (lots of small tools) and we’re glad we marked and measured all the pieces we removed. This made putting things together much easier.
We replaced the granite with a lighter color to brighten the room and installed a KitchenAid microwave on the kitchen island which gave us more cabinet space. It opens with a click of a button and saves us a lot of space. We have appointed experts for this part of the work.

The process took about five weeks from start to finish. The prep work – stripping, dipping and sanding – took us a lot longer than we expected. The figure was tall and heavy. Five weeks is a long time to wreck your kitchen. And at times, we used to tease each other (sorry, sir!).
Are we happy to paint instead of spending thousands of dollars on new cabinets? no doubt When will we do it again? Never! Something like this from the experts, although we are very happy with the finished product.
