How To Repair Brick Patio – Pavers are a natural choice for exteriors. They look good, are weather resistant, cheap and last a long time. But eventually they sink and drown and fall silent as the earth shifts and collapses. This is the problem I ran into with my outside stairs: they are over 30 years old and have twisted and sunk to the point where they can trip and fall!
Fortunately, the fix is pretty easy and cheap! In short: remove the bricks, level some sand/gravel, put the bricks back.

It only took me three hours to correct the steps! The length of your project will vary depending on the amount of work to be done.

There is almost always a reason to replace pavers. In my case, a possible cause of soil erosion under my pavers was poor roof drainage. Rainwater collects at the top of the stairs and either flows down the stairs like a waterfall or gently seeps into the ground below the stairs.
If you understand why your pavers are moving, fix it first! Or at least repair pavers as soon as you repair them.
Start lifting the cobblestones with different hands. You can start from the edge or any convenient position! I started with a loose medium brick on the steps. I stuck a screwdriver in the side and gradually turned the paver up until it was clean enough to hold.
Once one paver is loosened, the rest are easy to remove. Some loosen by hand, while others require some pushing with a pry bar or screwdriver.

I placed my bricks sideways on a piece of scrap plywood in more or less the same way it was removed. I also took the opportunity to remove any dirt that was still left on the edges.
If there are major gaps, loopholes, or fundamental-level valuation issues, now is the time to address them! Start by removing plant debris, dirt and mud, and any other debris that remains.
Most of the steps have started to sink due to erosion, leaving some very deep holes. I filled the holes with compacted soil. In my case I was able to get a brick and a rubber product! Consider renting a compactor to compact larger areas.
The ladder actually moved a bit, so I cleaned off the excess dirt (enough to leave room for a good 10mm layer of sand).

At this point, the base layer doesn’t have to be perfectly flat, although it should be pretty close.
Crushed stone or sand is used directly under pavers, as it can have a smooth and compact surface. You can buy stone powder in bags or in bulk.
Use a shovel to spread the rock dust over the area you are working on. You just need to be roughly level. Since my steps have the limitations of the current computer, I can use them as a reference. If you fill the site with stone dust and then press down on the pavers (with a hammer), it is easy to find the amount of stone dust needed to re-level the pavers. For most stairs, I had to add more in front of the stairs because that’s where the pavers sink in the most.
If you are painting a large area, use a long flat 2×4 or spirit level to spread and level the stone dust. You may want to seek help from another person.
Paver Repair In Cape Coral
Start changing paving stones with stone relief! This job is easy for this job – with the steps in place it’s easy to put the pavers back where I removed them. For each “paper”, I carefully tap each paver with a rubber mallet to measure the sand underneath. Sometimes this causes the paver to go lower than I would like, so I pull it back up and add more sand.
If you’re working on a larger area, you’ll want to survey the entire site with a powerful vibration monitor.
This step is optional, but recommended! Polymer sand is the best material. When wet with water, it can look like concrete to prevent the pavers from slipping. It also inhibits the growth of forests.
Pour some polymer sand onto the tiles and sweep it between the cracks with a broom. If you are working on a small area, pound with a rubber mallet to settle the polymer sand. For large areas, use a powerful compactor.

Some cracks will fill easily, while others will require some encouragement. When you hit the pavers with a rubber mallet, you will see that some of the sand has disappeared. Add more sand until it disappears. I think hitting the edges of the pavers works better than the middle.
Prepare the polymer sand by mixing it slightly with water according to the instructions on the package. You don’t need a lot of water! No water remains in the cracks. Ideally, this should be done on a day when no rain is expected for at least 24 hours.
Opportunity! Completed! That can’t be hard, can it? We hope that your paved driveway, steps or patio will be strong for a few more years. A few weeks ago we were sitting on our front porch and our neighbor told us that he was thinking of building a paver driveway in his garden. After speaking with a local contractor, he said:
We have to laugh because yes, we were researching the same project for our garden! Scott and I know that a paver patio is not as simple as laying bricks and finishing in one day, as any paver option we choose will require a proper drainage layer. Not to mention, our backyard has more potholes and valleys than all of Chicago.

When we said we were going to start a backyard project next weekend, he said:
We have to laugh again! You’re always asking about our latest home renovations, and we’re happy to fulfill seasonal projects. But in this case, we agree that digging up 10″ of soil and leveling our garden would take too long to do it ourselves (remember the research and understanding of how to grade your garden), and at some point we want to enjoy the yard, before summer is over. We have a modest laundry room and a few more before the season. Since it is a backyard project, we hired the same contractor who gave us new concrete years ago. If someone else can do this background preparation more efficiently, efficiently and with more information, we will more comfortable and we’ll be moving in as soon as all this digging is done.By the way?good decision.
Our contractor, Antonio, met with us a few days before the project so we could show the selected bricks (for depth) and discuss exactly where we wanted them to start/end. When his team started, he said it would be an easy day’s work. However, a group of three people started at 8am and worked until 6pm. Antonio still had to go back for sandblasting the next morning, but we’ll get to that soon!
So what does it take to maintain a brick paver patio? Lots of gravity. Carving. No more bathing. The team dug and moved and moved and moved until it was at ground level about 8-10 inches below the existing sidewalk level (you can see it on the right in the photo below):

Leaving the longest part of the day behind them, they began to clear the forest, bringing in crushed concrete gravel one by one with wheelbarrows. As the two pushed the gravel into place, Antonio followed with a shovel. this thing
In this place, the edge of the cobblestone is also known on the ground. Along the outer edge of the border will be our plants!
The next morning, Antonio came alone to finish the job with the sandblaster. The sand goes into the gravel and makes it another inch, making it a good level even for our bricks. A 6″ piece of wood (about the same or similar to 1″ x 5″) is used to hold everything in place. Although we try our best
If you walk on the finished floor level for our bricks, CC can’t help but leave a mark (seen below!).
How Can I Re Grout My Outdoor Brick Pavi…
Antonio finished that part of the job just before the weekend so we got up bright and early the next day to lay the bricks! We quickly learned that the two most important tools are a pair of good hand paints and grout. We start by first lining the entire surface with bricks one next to the other.
