How To Seal Brick Chimney – Your home is in constant conflict with moisture, which can penetrate building materials inside and out. Some parts of your home are more sensitive than others. Because brickwork is made of porous materials like brick and stone, it absorbs moisture like a sponge. The best way to protect yourself is to apply a waterproof sealant.

Keeping yourself in good condition requires maintenance, which means protection from moisture. If rain, moisture and condensation get into your masonry, the bricks will deteriorate quickly. This is primarily due to the freeze/thaw cycle, the same weathering process that causes asphalt roads to crack and pothole.

When water freezes inside the brick, the pores expand. The water then melts and evaporates, leaving more room to fill with water next time. This process is repeated throughout the winter months until the bricks lose their structural integrity, crack and eventually completely weaken and fall.

You may want to consider using a sealant because there has been water damage in the past. However, it is important to repair any existing moisture damage before applying the sealant. Otherwise, you may make the problem worse.

Self-sealing is the easiest and cheapest way to prevent water from entering the brick. Here’s why this service is worth it:

The right sealant can protect against moisture penetration for 15-20 years. The trick is to waterproof it with a vapor-tight sealant. This product protects the exterior of the brick from moisture by allowing the pores to “breathe”.

Along with choosing the right type of sealant, proper application is also key to achieving the best results. Leave this work to an experienced repair specialist, and yours.

When the opportunity presented itself to explain what our Two Flat project entailed, we jumped at it! Today we’re going to break down the last step of cleaning and sealing the brick to give it a nice protective finish, and then dusting it off.

Apart from a few minor details which we will fix before painting, the open chimneys of the two flats have been cleaned and sealed! We are familiar with this step of the process and it is always best to see what the “full bugs” look like once completed. We completed the first phase of this messy process a few months ago, and then brought in our favorite interior grout concrete contractor where the grout had fallen off over the years. After the cutting work was done and the dust settled, we were ready to seal!

It is worth noting that each of these steps occurred on all surfaces of the chimney. While the photos show the steps in the correct order, they highlight the different parts of the fireplace. This fireplace is visible from all four rooms, so for reference, we’ve indicated the location of each photo in the captions.

We started the project with a quick dry cleaning of each part of the fireplace with a deck brush and a wet/dry sweep once to remove any loose pieces. Goggles and masks were needed here because those old bricks were dustier than you’d think! We didn’t hesitate to be aggressive with our cleaning because we wanted everything to be gone.

. This step made us want to start from scratch because the house was full of dust by then, but we knew that would happen.

After the loose parts were thrown away and cleaned up, we moved on to the next dusty step. We inserted the wire wheel into our mini drill/driver and started with the rough edge. We wanted to erase some of the overspray from the printer and smooth out any bumps in the new solution. The wire wheel helped to tackle the problem areas quickly, and we were ready to start cleaning. Again!

. We started this step of the process by placing rags around our work area to protect our freshly finished floor. We then sprayed Simple Green very liberally in a 4:1 ratio on small sections of the chimney and let it sit for a few minutes.

After giving the cleaner time to dry, we once again aggressively brushed all surfaces with our deck brush. We were very surprised to see the bricks

! It turns out that a century of cracked plaster, and then repairing the whole house is dirt!

After we let the bricks air dry for a few hours, it’s time to spray our caulk. This step was as simple as shaking up a can of caulk and carefully pouring it into a spray bottle.

Signs Your Brick Chimney Needs A Sealer

After pumping and pressurizing the spray gun, we carefully applied an even layer of caulk to the bricks (again using a floor protector and cutting cloth). That’s more or less! The sealant takes 4 hours to cure between additional coats, so we did a final check to make sure there were no drips.

We returned the next morning for a quick check and decided to apply another coat to the case. It probably wasn’t necessary, but we wanted to make sure the uneven, porous surface was well covered before we finished the project.

As a quick refresher, here’s a quick lunch experience before/during/after Block 1. For reference, the first photo was taken before we started sculpting, the second before tickpointing and the third photo. After final cleaning and sealing.

If more than five years have passed, you are probably overdue. If you’ve never done this, now is the time to think about it, because it could prevent thousands of dollars in damage to your home.

Most homeowners don’t think about chimneys until they see damage. This makes sense given that most people keep a close eye on their roof. Chimneys can be neglected if for some reason you don’t go to the roof.

Steps To Take If Your Chimney Suddenly Collapses

Because chimneys are located above the roof, they are exposed to harsh conditions year-round, including storms, fallen trees and branches, snow, rain, and high levels of humidity. Water damage is a major cause of wear and tear, so it’s important to do what you can to protect your fireplace.

Waterproofing your chimney can protect it for years to come and save you thousands of dollars in repairs later.
