Ikea Black Brown Stain Match – I wanted to add crown molding to the Ikea Billy bookcase, so I searched the internet for black and brown colors, but then I decided to try the formula myself. We keep the crystal on Billy’s bookshelf in the kitchen. Here’s the best close-up before picture I could find:
Here you can see to the left in the kitchen. It’s very simple. This picture is before you get to the second door. We are bad Ikea salespeople, people! We happened upon a white door and a dark brown one. We actually went back to Ikea TWICE because once we bought the wrong color and twice the wrong style.

So I bought some cheap 2 3/4 inch crown molding from ACE Hardware. I wanted to add a little.

After installing this, I had to paint. I tried Minwax in Jacobean dark chocolate. I did it twice but it wasn’t dark enough. It is also browner than the color of the bookcase.
So I did something stupid because I wasn’t sure if I should mix the stain and the paint, but I applied a coat of Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation in Tudor (a taupe brown). . It’s a paint but like a gel polish. I use a small foam brush.
And it wasn’t dark, so I used a coat of Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation in black and brushed it on with a foam brush.
I’m proud of that! It just looks like a black dot, not paint. It looked like this (some images with flash, others without):
Paint Touch Up For Your Ikea Furniture: A New Product Review
It is important to note that the type of wood you are using will react to stains differently. It can absorb more or less. In our opinion, the type of wood that forms the crown is pine. Our apartment is mostly furnished with IKEA furniture. We have tons of stuff we bought with our wedding money and stuff we had before we moved in together. We love dark chocolate, so most of our products are that. However, we also have a cue from Arie’s bachelor days, which is an unfinished wood color.
After we got married, we needed a place to store all of our cute gifts, so we got a china cabinet and a small cabinet to put my candles. The cut block didn’t look good next to all the dark chocolate, so we decided to paint it. It is very easy to make because it is unfinished.
Step 1: A very light sanding to make sure the dirt is gone (and we feed here because to remove the previous dirt).
Step 2: Stop! We use general finish gel colors in Java. We only need one pint for two coats. It is important to let the stain dry overnight between each coat. Apply with a foam brush.

Step 3: Varnish. After letting the stain dry for a few days, we finished with Minwax Quick Dry Polyurethane. Since we were using it on the buffet, we did one layer over everything and then another layer on top. Also applies with a foam brush.
Look how well it goes with real dark chocolate! You can hardly tell the difference! The only comment for those interested in doing the dark brown stain is that it comes out more like paint than stain. The wood grain on the bottom doesn’t look as good as I would like. Overall, I think it’s the best for now. Ikea used to sell matching paint, but they stopped doing that. Anyone else trying to destroy IKEA furniture? Thanks to Mohawk Consumer Products for sponsoring this post. As always, my opinion is based 100% on using the product.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that I love IKEA furniture. In fact, 90% of the furniture in my home office is from Ikea, including the popular IKEA Malm hack and the IKEA desk. Our dining chairs are from IKEA. The table and chairs in my sweet Avery room are from IKEA. All the pieces that make up this “building” in Atley’s sweet IKEA room (PS: you can read all about the secrets of painting IKEA laminate furniture in this post).
Seriously, I could go on. While I’m always impressed with the quality of IKEA products, we’ve had a few pieces of the same length get completely damaged and scratched along the way, as you’d expect (with any furniture, for the record). Although I would love to find a way to paint IKEA furniture back in the day, so far I don’t have a good way to fix these bugs and holes 🙂
I have had the honor of being a brand ambassador for Mohawk Consumer Products for some time now and am a huge fan of every Mohawk product I have tried. But when Mohawk told me they were releasing a 3-in-1 Repair Stick in a color that matches the most common IKEA furniture colors, I wanted to hug them (and I would, but we live too far away—seriously, Mohawk is full of the best people you will know). How To Paint Laminate Ikea Furniture The Right Way
Needless to say, I can’t wait to try the Mohawk 3 in 1 Repair Sticks! I’ve used it many times before, but today I decided to document the process because I decided to renovate the IKEA Galant bookcase in my office. This is the common “chocolate brown” color from IKEA. A while ago, I thought it would be a good idea to hang rods and curtains to hide what’s on the shelf. But in the end, I hated how it turned out and removed the hardware with a rod, leaving a big old, unsightly hole in the top corner of the bookcase where the screws had been. I was able to fix the hole and have a perfect color within minutes. Read on to find out how I did it.
If you prefer a video tutorial, you can check out one of the official Mohawk 3 in 1 Repair Stick demos as I repair a black IKEA office chair below. But for those who like written instructions and step-by-step pictures, there is also a written version of this DIY furniture repair.
1) First, use the built-in leveling cap to cut the damaged area of the furniture to remove the protruding damage.
2) Then shake the correction bar 3 1 to 60 seconds to mix the paint. Then press the paint onto the tip of the marker onto the paper towel until the tip of the marker is completely covered.

3) Use a paint marker to replace the color lost due to the damage being repaired.
4) Next, use a filler stick to fill gouges, gouges, or holes. Hold it at a 45-degree angle and apply firm pressure as you rub the filler rod back and forth over the damaged area. Continue rubbing until completely covered. Make sure all blanks are completely filled in. I recommend erring on the side of filling AVER 🙂
That’s it! I told you fixing this piece of furniture is easy! But this is not the best. The best part is that with Mohawk’s 3-in-1 Repair Sticks, you can match any IKEA paint or finish, which I couldn’t do until this product came out. 5 minutes
