Ikea Malm Dressing Table Hack – I love doing little DIY projects that are inexpensive and can be completed in a day! This is the case with this very simple IKEA cutting board – I covered this simple dressing table with a faux fabric for a very high end result.
I have been looking at pieces of furniture for a long time. People, fabric and bamboo details are making a big comeback. (Read my last post for my new bamboo chair.) The straw fabric adds visual interest and texture to an otherwise simple and modern design.

Unfortunately, these equipment are very expensive. I can’t spend thousands of dollars on something with such a simple build. Although I built the table myself, I found the perfect design in this cheap IKEA Malm table.
Times The Ikea Malm Dresser Was Used To Perfection
Although the expensive furniture is covered with real grass cloth, I decided to use fake grass cloth for my first test. It’s cheap and cool and sticky, so I’m not too worried about spoiling it. The brand I received is from RoomMates and is available both on Amazon and Target online.
But first, a word about IKEA furniture. Yes, it’s cheap, but most of the time you get what you pay for. There are compromises in the type of material used – usually laminated fiber or very thin pine – and in assembly. I don’t worry too much about the small application and finish because I know I will be covered. To strengthen the structure and extend the life of the piece, I added wood glue to the joints. Hopefully, that’s enough for now.
This is what the book looks like up close. We smooth the printed surface with a cloth. It has no form. There is a paper backing that just peels off – like a sticker. This paper can be removed without leaving any surface damage. You can move it and adjust as needed.
I cut a large piece to wrap around the outside of the table and put the paper under the legs. The hardest part is flattening the air bubbles that tend to form. I just use a wallpaper downloader to do this as best as I can. The edition of this book is very forgiving of any defects.

I wrapped the excess paper around the legs and trimmed the edges to create that mitered look. The way you would wrap a gift. Then the other two pieces cover the inside of the legs, right on the holes you see above. I ran my finger over the small holes and marked them on the paper. This is where the drawer comes together next.
I think I need to order a second roll of paper for the drawer but I could cover it completely using scraps. There are probably four or five pieces covering the box. You can’t tell where the wires are even if you look closely. This book is so user-friendly!

A folding table that offers a lot of storage, but also takes up little space. The first independent clothing was his four-legged table with small tires that could only hold a few hairs; however, I need something that will bring up a lot of hair drying attachments and red lipstick addiction. The large wardrobe is still in the corner, so I decided that we should move this new one to the wall to avoid dominating the room.
To get exactly what I wanted for less, I decided to DIY a new outfit. Using the clear IKEA METOD kitchen wall for the style, I added a marble, shaped it and painted it the same color as the walls so it blends with the rest of the room.
Can You Paint Ikea Malm Dresser? [and How To]
IKEA cabinets are well made, great value for money and save me having to build the entire frame from MDF. I chose the METOD shelf with two doors and three sides in white because it was the cheapest option. I built the unit (removed the shelves and doors at this point) and attached it to the wall using heavy duty plugs and screws and fittings on the top two corners of the unit.
To make the front of the dress less clear and detailed, I added some door trim that I left in the walls. These polymer screws are from Screwfix and are light and easy to use. You can also buy simple wooden strips at many DIY stores.
I just measured the size of the panels (mine was 51x31cm) and cut each end at a 45° angle in the miter box with a hand saw. I attached the system to the METOD doors using mega-grab glue. Once the glue was dry, I used decorator’s caulk to seal any gaps and connections, making the structure appear unstable.
I then primed the unit with Zinsser B-I-N – a great work primer that respects the melamine material made by METOD – and gave it two coats of shoulder paint.

The last thing is to get a nice shiny surface to put on the unit. I took the exact dimensions of the METOD cabinet surface (37 x 80 cm) from a local stone yard and cut and polished my hollow hole. Expect to pay around £100 – £200 for the same item.
The marble is really heavy and I just put it on top and it doesn’t need to be attached. If you are using a lighter material like wood for your surface, I would use mega-grab glue to hold it in place.
So, that’s my super easy IKEA project! It ticks all the boxes for me as it offers lots of storage, feels light when on the floor and the marble top makes it feel special. Let me know what you think in the comments below! I just realized last week (horror) that I haven’t done a proper post about one of my favorite places in the house. My home office / workspace / dressing table / other areas of my bedroom / flat room … its uses are endless. I got a great response to this site on Instagram, so I thought it was worth writing a blog post.
I really struggled to find a table that was cheap but still had enough storage and table space (for all the copper in the collection – which is a shame because the copper is still there according to all the trade shows I visited a few weeks ago that. ). There are some great desks out there don’t get me wrong but they all have an expensive tag, IKEA pretty much ticks all the boxes but I know I want some of the desks in the dimensions of my room. Most IKEA desks are no more than 1.5m and I needed a 3m desk. Make an IKEA kitchen arrangement. The answer to my prayers, and it’s actually cheaper than some of the table tops that Ikea has! For storage space – everyone has seen these dreams – the ever popular IKEA Malm Chest 3 drawers. Remember that depending on the size of your room and the height of the work surface, you may need to trim the work surface to fit. The same goes for the depth of the work area – it depends on the area you play with. And this is pretty much, my IKEA trim, the work surface is not protected or anything, the sheer weight of the table means it doesn’t slide – yet.
