Last weekend I spent the day painting the unfinished cabinets we bought at Home Depot. We bought two upper cabinets and they were marked 20% off cabinets at the time, which made me decide to buy them instead of Ikea, even though I prefer Ikea. Love the white IKEA! I think it’s awesome! So I did what any forgiving colorist would do…I took it apart and brought in a piece that matched the colors 🙂
Before I can start doing anything, I have to take down the cabinets. It is slightly bitter, especially around the edges, as it is raw. When everything goes well, I wipe off the dust with a dry cloth, then wipe with a damp cloth. I also removed the doors and hardware. After cleaning out the cupboards I can start again. I chose an oil-based primer as I also paint the inside of the cabinets with smooth laminate. I want to make sure there are no problems with the paint.
After the primer had dried and hardened a bit, I took out the brush and sprayed it with IKEA white paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions. I prefer using a sprayer over a roller or brush on cabinets and furniture because it gives a professional result that cannot be repeated! Plus it just makes the process a breeze and how quickly everything is drawn!

We also built little platforms out of 2×4’s to lift the cabinets off the floor to give them some height when placed in the room. Nothing fancy, just cut to size, pre-drilled and screwed together with wood screws.
It’s totally our style and trend here. But we have to slow down, because it says that the mother-in-law is coming to town at the end of March! I think we’ll get it done in time (you know that IKEA Hemnes 8 dresser I talked about last week is bigger than I thought? Well, I want to paint something else to match it. But what color is the white IKEA Hemnes what is it?
I did some googling and the most popular matching paint is Benjamin Moore’s Acadia White, OC-38. But I wanted to see for myself – I did a good thing because Arcadia white was not as close to Ikea white as I thought.
I went to Benjamin Moore, Home Depot and Lowes and found as many white/neutral paint chips as possible. This is very difficult because without the clothes in front of you, the paint chips that are closest to the real color look far away! Who knew IKEA white was more cream than white?

I pulled out the dresser drawer and started picking up the paint chips. I started with Benjamin Moore paint chips:
You can see above that Benjamin Moore’s Arcadia White is pretty, but it’s not.
So after bringing the eagle to the recorder (pictured above), you can compare the closest match, which is the Clear Moon PWN-30. Closer than any color from Benjamin Moore, in my opinion.
Valspar’s closest match is 7002-8, which I’d say is the best of all paint company brands, but even then it’s still not up to par.

Then I remembered that these hardware stores are available in color matching! Whew! I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner! ? So I went to Home Depot and the front of the cabinets to match the paint.
So just compare the paint industry color with the paint corresponding to the end of the stick and this is what it looks like.
If you don’t have IKEA Hemnes furniture and just want to see it, these will do. But if you have a white IKEA item and want to match it more, don’t waste your time looking for a matching color. Most of the time you just remove the cabinets, shelves or legs from the furniture and take it to your local Home Depot or where they sell paint and have them match you!

The laminate look of the IKEA Billy bookcase is difficult to paint. The key to good paint is to start using a primer designed to adhere to the surface. Once you have a starting point, you can paint the bookshelf in the color you want. Since Billy was covered with a thin barrier instead of wood, the usual method of preparing the paint did not work.
Billy’s book is so popular that if you want to draw it yourself, you can’t do it alone. Read on to learn more about great work and having a beautiful shelf.
A common method of repainting furniture is to sand the base and apply primer or paint directly. This does not work with most IKEA chairs, including the Billy bookcase. They have plastic sleeves, and while they are durable and attractive, they are not always the best. Chips or dents can become unsightly and expose the chipboard underneath. Laminate around the edges can melt or loosen, and the finish will not be as attractive as a well-chosen color.
If you try to paint Billy’s laminate flooring, it may stick in places and leave shiny paint. Since you can’t sand under laminate, you have to build up a layer to sand it properly. Most recommend a shellac-based sealing primer. There are many advantages to using this type of primer for IKEA painting or DIY projects. Primers are designed to adhere to any surface and form a good seal.

Zinnser B-I-N primer is the most used in IKEA projects. It will cover all stains, scratches and blemishes while blocking odors. The original adheres to laminate or wood without any problems. From the very beginning, you can paint it like any other small project.
You can use long rollers and brushes for more details and angles. If you want to do a serious cleaning job, you can take Billy’s main parts apart, paint them and put them back together.
Chalk paint is a thick, opaque paint that adheres to almost any surface. You can safely use chalk paint on IKEA laminate furniture, but there are a few things you should keep in mind. Chalk paint adheres well to itself, but still does not hold well on furniture. Chalk strokes can easily smudge or scratch from Billy’s notebook.
