James Hardie Iron Gray Sherwin Williams – I don’t know about you guys, but I have a serious love affair with the backyard at home on the weekends! Looking through the window isn’t about hunting for a fancy house – I’m talking about walking through a nice part of town and looking outside of a nice house. I’m not sure if I’ll be lucky enough to build my own house, but if I ever have, I have a lot of exterior design ideas and colors in my head from those weekend drives. As you all know, my style is traditional, but I like to take unexpected, innovative things. Today I’ve teamed up with James Hardie to share some of my favorite outdoor design ideas and colors with an online tool that can put some of those ideas into your head and show you how they might look in your home.
I believe many of you have heard of James Hardie® fiber cement products, but if not, they are the number 1 brand in North America with a wide variety of Form (plex, shingled sided, trim and others). Designed to resist moisture and rot, as well as insect damage (the woodpeckers that destroyed my side of the wood now don’t have a chance with the stuff). And as much as I care about the product’s durability and how it looks on the outside of the house, I love that it comes in so many beautiful, durable color options, enhanced with their ColorPlus® technology that brings color into the home. Baked. Home decoration, keep your home looking beautiful all year round without much maintenance. It’s been around for a long time (my parents used it in a house they built 20 years ago) and it’s a product I would consider using in a new house in the future or if my house needs to be lived in.

So I’m going to share six exterior design and paint ideas to get your wheels turning (if you’re lucky!) on new construction or exterior design:
New Modern Farmhouse Influences
This gray house makes me feel good – I love both the design and the classic color combination of gray (James Hardy’s Light Mist) and white. But what I really like is the twist of using two different styles: HardiePlank® stacked on the first floor and HardieShingle® sided on the second floor.
The combination of two different side styles and textures adds more visual interest than the same profile used throughout. The triangle cutout on the outer crown is also a nice detail!
There are many houses with two or three different colors of the sides, but to be honest, if they come from a family with completely different colors, that’s not for me. But using two different shades of siding in the same color family (I stick to two, not three or more!) can be really beautiful, as you can see with this beautiful mountain home:
HardiePlank overlapping sided and HardieShingle sided in Monterey Taupe were used on the exterior of the house, but dark HardiePanel® in the same maroon family was used for the vertical siding and HardieTrim® battens on the triangular roof. It’s hard to tell what color the door in the picture is, but using the same maroon color as the door would be a great way to tie it all together!
Sherwin Williams Color Of The Year 2021
One of my dream homes locally (it’s for sale and thank goodness it’s out of my price range because I’m tempted to uproot my family to drive across town for this beauty!) with a beautiful combination of siding and stone. ! You can add stone to the exterior walls of your home or use it as a small accent like in this beautiful home:
They used hardboard in Boothbay Blue, then added stone to the front columns and pipes – it really warms up the outside of the house, doesn’t it?! You can use brick in the same way as the brick foundation, porch, and stairs in this lovely house that goes well with the Sail Cloth Hardiplank roof:
I’m a big fan of dark gray (that’s why I chose that color for our kitchen island!) so I love the dark gray and white of this house:
One of the subtle things they do to make their exteriors more attractive is to extend the trim color over the exterior of the house. Overlapping sided HardiePlank in Iron Gray was used for most of the exterior, in addition to Artic White HardieTrim® on the sides and around the windows, they also used vertical sided HardiePanel and HardieTrim battens in the same Artic White color. The second floor of the house leads to a large spire and portico area above their front door.
Exterior — Riptide Builders
While I’m not a fan of using two unrelated colors on the front of the house, I do like the idea of adding a pop of color in an otherwise understated space, like this long front hallway. -ceiling:
Do you like it?! Woodland Cream Hardiplank overlay used on the exterior is great for this type of color play because it coordinates well with other color families like green, blue, and red.
It’s only recently that I’ve started seeing homes with two contrasting colors (usually black and white), but I’m seeing more of this, so I think it’s a design trend that homeowners will love. This is definitely something I would like to incorporate into my future home! Arctic white hardi trim is combined with black windows and gutters in this beautiful home – I find the difference between the two striking!
If you’re going to use that black and white combination, I think the key to making it work is to use one neutral color throughout the rest of your house, like brown or gray like Hardiplank in khaki brown. This house is brown or white.
Exciting Exterior Home Trends For 2021
The best way to get an idea of what a given exterior color combination will look like is through a display – James Hardie has a good one for you to look at. The first step is to choose the main color – it may not be surprising that I chose one of these gray or blue colors:
James Hardie’s dresser and dresser products are also available from Prime, so you can paint them any color you want, but honestly, with all the beautiful color options their products come with, I chose to go with them. Because their ColorPlus® technology gives you a finish that lasts longer than a typical paint job, you can save yourself the headache of repainting down the road.
After choosing your main exterior color in the Visualizer, choose a picture of the house style that will help you better visualize your color (I chose a farmhouse because that’s what I’ve always dreamed of!) and continue choosing. The color of your upholstery and accents, along with additional options such as the color of your roof, windows, doors and shutters:
It’s fun to play with it and see how to mix different colors! When you’re done, it tells you about your color personality based on your choices – it suits my style: “You surround yourself with calm, peaceful colors. You’re relaxed but classic.” Yes! It allows you to save and share your finished palette with family and friends!
