If you watch Fixer Upper as religiously as I do, you know how great Joanna is when it comes to choosing colors for each space. The colors always seem to match the furniture and accessories perfectly, and the room flows naturally.

Now you can get the paint he uses around the house. But at $42 a gallon, it can be quite expensive.

Walking into a store with a million different paint samples and trying to pick just one can be overwhelming. You take a beautiful blue and place it next to a lighter shade, only to find that the first blue is too dark, almost black. You will find at least 300 different shades of gray and you won’t be able to tell them apart.

It’s like smelling too many perfume samples and not being able to tell them apart – your eyes are blinded by the different shades.

Or you paint your bedroom a color I can only imagine looking like the inside of a robin’s egg (yes, I did!)

As you can see, I am not an expert. But when it comes to choosing colors for the farm, I made my own little plan, I hope it helps you too 🙂

I love this soft shade of gray. It complements all the white tones in the room without being too bold to take away the space.

One of my favorite renovations is probably the best restaurant. Can you imagine gathering for Christmas dinner here? ? great In any case, the room is relatively dark, the few windows and the white shade on the walls make it feel light and airy.

It is not always 100% neutral. A pop of green goes well with all the wood decor and brown sofas.

And he doesn’t always choose too light paint colors. The darker grey/green is beautiful here. Note that all the furniture is white to offset the dark colors and the rooms have lots of natural light from the windows.

Similarly, in rooms that don’t get a lot of natural light, go for light gray (aka gray + beige) with white and wood accents to keep the space light and airy.

While the dark gray/green used by Joanna in the example above looks great in a bright room, it may not look good in a windowless bathroom.

If you want to paint a large room with lots of natural light, you can choose a darker paint color if you want. If the room is small or dark, choose a lighter shade.

Also, consider the furniture you already own. If you have a lot of white furniture, like in the dining room, you can go for neutrals or add some color. If your living room has a dark brown sofa and shades, I would probably stick to light, neutral tones. This bold focal rug has a lot of character, so a slightly lighter wall color won’t overwhelm it.

Well, you know that you usually need to stick to light or color. Head to the store now to get all the paint samples. If it catches your eye, get it.

I just went to Home Depot and bought over 50 paint samples. I may have been targeted (or maybe it was because my kids were making snow angels on the floor), but who cares!

Once you get them home and organize them, it’s easy to start eliminating them. I can usually narrow it down to 3-5 colors.

For our farmhouse nursery renovation that we just started (yay!) I picked up the white/grey/powder white swatches.

So you have chosen a beautiful gray color. so perfect. You painted the whole room just to make it purple. This is Barney’s dream room (if you don’t get this reference, be happy😉).

Take the swatch from step 3 and look at the darkest color in the swatch. Tones appear instantly. If it’s still bright white and you’re not sure, put it on a piece of white paper for contrast.

The colors in the darkest shades you see in the swatches show up even in the lightest shades. So you think you’ve selected a solid gray, but instead you get a purplish gray.

This step is especially important when choosing a neutral paint color for your farmhouse (ie, a shade of gray or gray). When choosing a gray color, consider the undertone you want. If it’s a perfect grey, look for something with brown/dark brown undertones.

See below. Color the bottom two colors by hand, just look at the top gray. Doesn’t it look like a dull gray? Then compare it to the entire sample, especially the darkest color. The last color is definitely green. So the gray on top will also be green!

For some reason, the step I always skip can save me from living in a redheaded egg in our bedroom. sampling.

If you have 3-5 colors, you can get samples for a few dollars each. In the end, it’s worth spending a few extra dollars rather than painting an entire room only to find out you don’t like the color.

For our nursery, we got a great example in white and alabaster. After I got the other two colors home, I removed them and taped them to the wall.

This is a really important step. You can go through all the above steps, get a home sample and still love the color in the paint can. But hang it on the wall of the room you are going to. Matching the actual wall colors to your furniture and decor can be a game changer!
