Kitchen Colors With Honey Oak Cabinets – If you’re looking to update your home and need to use large areas of kitchen cabinets or honey oak trim, a few coats of paint in the right color can instantly bring your space into the modern era.
O dear oak. The wood of choice for homes in the 80s and 90s. Oak, of course, is not a natural shade of honey, but has developed an amber hue over time due to the use of stains and polyurethane.
Kitchen Colors With Honey Oak Cabinets
Unfortunately, honey oak kitchen cabinets, trim, cabinets, doors, and even floors are not the modern look most homeowners want today.
Bye Bye Honey Oak Kitchen Cabinets, Hello Brighter Kitchen!
If you’re on a budget or just aren’t interested in dealing with cabinetry or whole-house decorating, your honey oak nightmares can be solved!
Interior paint can transform any space, and hardwood floors are no exception.
First, you need to decide if you want to accentuate the tone of the wood or blend it in and camouflage it a bit?
The most important thing to understand about honey oak is that it has a color, and that color is orange, or more like a yellowish orange.

Of course, other types of wood can be colored and end up being the same orange or yellow, but usually when we see these colors we call them “honey oak”.
Other woods, such as maple or pine, may be translucent yellow or orange due to the stain or polyurethane used to trim them and the fact that polyurethane turns amber over time.
When looking for a paint color to match honey oak paneling, flooring or even cabinets, you must always keep in mind the shade of wood you are using.
Unfortunately, probably not. Like many things in the 80s and 90s, honey oak has had its day and probably won’t be coming back anytime soon.
Paint Colors That Go With Oak Cabinets
But just because honey oak is no longer the norm, doesn’t mean your home has to stay in the same season forever.
Even if your trim, cabinets, or floors are a lovely orange-yellow, there are a few things you can do to modernize your home.
To understand what paint colors work with them, it’s important to first understand the basics of color theory.
Known for its orange color and strong grain, honey oak should be understated, or you just have to embrace it and choose colors to match it.
How To Make Oak Kitchen Cabinets Look Modern (without Painting)
To achieve this with color, you can create a harmonious (similar) palette that uses a color similar to the main base color (orange) to blend the honey oak, or create a contrasting palette, which includes a complimentary palette that will, conversely, enhance or create a focal point , honey oak.
Which palette you choose to use will require you to pay attention to the undertones in the wood to determine which paint color will work best.
There are two main ways to refinish oak paneling, doors or cabinets by simply painting the walls:
Finding the perfect color for your cabinets, trim or honey oak flooring comes down to finding the right color palette, whether you use similar or complementary colors.
Paint Colors That Go With Honey Oak Cabinets Or Trims Story
If you’re confused by all these color theory terms, take a look at the color wheel and determine what colors you’re trying to use. Honey oak is a type of orange. From there, I recommend using one of two methods to create a smooth color palette:
By using two colors on opposite sides of the main color, you can create complementary color palettes. In this case we use orange, so the colors on both sides are yellow and red.
Obviously, you wouldn’t paint your walls orange, yellow, or red, but these are basic tones you might want to consider. So beige with yellow tones, beige and gray with orange tones go well with warm creamy beige. Avoid beige shades with green undertones, as they start to look flat against the warmth of the cabinets.
If you surround the warm oak with another warm color, it will blend in and look purposeful. A soft, warm neutral color with orange or yellow accents can balance the space and help fade the oak a bit.
Different Ways Getting Rid Of Honey Oak Can Modernize Your Home
Again, stick to natural, earthy colors. The warm oak look is very natural and complements the colors drawn from nature. You want to make sure there’s still enough contrast so the space doesn’t look cheap. I’ve found that using gray (even if it’s the right shade) can fill a room with a lot of honeyed oak and can make a room feel washed out and squashed.
By using colors on the other side of the color wheel, you get a complementary palette. The opposite of orange is blue, and the opposite of yellow is purple. Each bright blue contrasts strongly with the orange in the honey oak, enhancing the effect of the color.
Before you start thinking contrast is a bad thing, it’s not. A well-designed room has contrast that works well between different colors to create a cohesive color scheme.
The contrast with the cabinets in orange tones can be a good thing. You don’t want a bright primary blue on your walls! However, using this color in a more subtle way (for example, turquoise) will create balance and add some dynamism to these cabinets without standing out.
