Wood is a material commonly associated with furniture, and for good reason. It is renewable, reusable, sustainable, beautiful and an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. We believe that wood is a major driver of climate change. In 2012, we set the goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have achieved this goal and today more than 98% of the wood used to make our products is FSC certified or recycled.

Forests help balance the climate, clean the air we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nurture wildlife biodiversity and provide habitat for local communities that depend on the forest for their livelihoods. 90% of the planet’s plant and animal species need forests to survive. They provide food, fuel, wood and many other ecosystem services we depend on. Procuring approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood from around 50 countries per year has a significant impact on the world’s forests and timber industry and is a major responsibility that positively impacts timber sourcing. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure meeting the needs of forest-dependent people, sustainable operation of companies, protection of forest ecosystems and increase of biological diversity.

At the company, we work to promote responsible forestry according to strict industry standards. We do not allow timber into our supply chain from illegal or high conservation value forest areas or from forest areas in social conflict. Prior to co-operation, suppliers must demonstrate compliance with strict wood procurement requirements. All suppliers must source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC certified or reclaimed wood). All suppliers are regularly audited and non-compliant suppliers are subject to immediate corrective action. Working with our suppliers, we are proud to achieve our goal of more sustainable sourcing by 2020. More than 98% of the wood used to make products today is FSC certified or recycled.

Unsustainable agriculture, infrastructure expansion and illegal logging are putting increasing pressure on the world’s forests and surrounding ecosystems, so it’s time to take a more holistic approach to protecting and sustaining these vital resources for future generations. The Forest Positive Agenda 2030 aims to improve forest management, increase biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and support the rights and needs of forest-dependent people throughout the supply chain and innovate for smarter wood use. The agenda focuses on three main areas: • Making responsible forest management a global standard. • Stopping deforestation and replanting degraded landscapes. • Lead innovation in the wise use of wood by designing all products from scratch to reuse, restoration, redevelopment and ultimately recycling.

For years, we have worked with companies, governments, social groups and NGOs to combat forest degradation and deforestation and increase the quantity and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests, both in our own supply chain and beyond. We help improve global forest management and responsible sourcing of wood that meets industry standards, creating resilient forest landscapes and increasing biodiversity.

Chipboard is made from recycled wood and sawdust – so misplaced wood chips, wood chips and sawdust are likely to become a resource rather than waste. For example, we use tables for bookshelves, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect against wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil to the furniture, which improves the appearance of the furniture.

Veneers are thin sheets of wood placed over something like chipboard to give it a durable surface and look like natural wood – so we enjoy many of the benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common types of veneer are birch, ash, oak and beech, and we have developed a special UV varnish that helps preserve the natural texture of the wood. The advantage of a slightly thicker veneer in giving the furniture a long and beautiful life is how you can repair and sand it if the surface is damaged.
