Summer is here and it’s time to update your home’s exterior with paint.
While some towns don’t have many true mid-century gems, there are still bungalows from the ’50s and ’60s and properties from the ’70s whose simple architecture lends itself to a mid-century update.
Your home’s colors have a big impact on your curb appeal and aren’t something you change often, so it’s worth taking the time to plan the right color choices and create a mid-century look for your home. What is your dream
Know Your Home: Mid Century Modern Style
First, have a general idea of whether you want a bright home, a dark home, or neutral colors. If you’re not sure, search for inspiration on Pinterest (check out this board when I started) and walk around areas with modern or mid-century type properties to see what you like.
The climate also influences this decision. One of my favorite vacation spots, a mecca for mid-century homes, is Palm Springs, California. Many of the homes are brightly painted white, perfect for the sunny skies, cool blue pools, and lush palm trees. I like the way it looks.
Unlike Calgary, Canada, where I live, the whiteness doesn’t have the same effect even though there’s snow on the ground half the year. In colder climates, consider using deep, warm colors that look great year-round, like the Oregon home below.
Your home will give you a hint as to which paint choice is best. Look at fixed elements such as the roof, brick, stone, wood trim, soffits, and eave valleys. If you don’t plan on changing it, you should consider it as part of the overall palette.

Use a base tone of stone or brick to create a suitable complementary color. In the example below, the painted cladding highlights the green undertones of the stone, creating a soft-looking palette.
For red/brown toned brick, you’ll be limited to soft grays or deep chocolate browns to make it work. Taupe or gray tone bricks allow you to experiment with blues, greens and neutrals. Of course, you can also paint the brick box as a decoration or body color, depending on its placement in the house (see point 3 below).
Be sure to work when the roof is visible, as it is one large expanse of color and will influence the exterior paint color you choose.
Roofs with brown tones, especially those with a reddish tint, are the most difficult to work with and, like brick, it is best to stick to neutral colors. If your roof has strong red tones, avoid blues and greens as they intensify the color, but not in a good way. (Note that the roof is not necessarily the star of the show, just a side character.)
Exterior Paint Ideas For Inviting Curb Appeal
For roofs with blue or green tones, try to find colors with the same base tone to create a more unified scheme. A black and gray roof is the easiest color choice for your home.
Landscape also plays an important role. Avoid Red House if you want to emphasize the beautiful red maple trees. A charcoal or dark blue house is a good choice to represent the beauty of autumn.
Keep an eye on your neighbors, too. I don’t want to look like my neighbors, but I also don’t want to stand out like the only bubblegum pink house on the block.
Sunlight will change the color of the painted color, so you will have to experiment with some options. We recommend painting a 2″ x 2″ square and trying it on all the exterior walls of your home.

North-facing walls and shaded areas tend to be darker because they receive less sunlight, while south-facing walls are more exposed to the sun. Lighten or darken to achieve the desired look.

If you’re handy, this is a great project that you can do yourself and reap huge benefits. However, preparing and painting an entire home is a lot of work, so be realistic about your abilities and available time. If in doubt, use the services of a professional painter.

I pulled out into the driveway, looked around the house, and asked, “What’s going on? “Do I need to change anything?” Is it the paint? What about landscaping? ”I can’t put my finger on it. I was so involved in the design of the home’s original color palette that I was hesitant to make any changes. However, when it comes to decoration, white is a common choice and doesn’t require much thought.
