Mid Century Modern Home Colors
Summer is here and it’s a great time to update your home by painting the exterior.

While some cities don’t have many true midcentury gems, there are still bungalows from the 50s and 60s and unique properties from the 70s whose simple architecture lends itself to a midcentury-inspired renovation.
Since the color of your home has a big impact on the curb appeal and is something you don’t change very often, it’s a good idea to take the time to plan the right color choices to create century-old interior inspiration for your home. that you imagine
To begin with, have a general idea of whether you want a light house or a dark house – or a medium tone. If you’re not sure, look for inspiration on Pinterest (check out this board of mine to get started) and visit neighborhoods with modern or mid-century features to see what you like.
Climate plays a role in this decision. One of my favorite vacation spots that is a mecca for mid-century homes is Palm Springs CA. Many houses are painted bright white, which is perfect against the sunny sky, cool blue pools and green palm trees. I like the way it looks.

Compare that to where I live in Calgary, Canada, where a severe whiteout doesn’t have the same effect as having snow on the ground 6 months of the year. In colder climates, consider using deeper, warmer colors that look great year-round, like this Oregon home below.
Your home will give you clues about the best paint choices. Look for fixed elements such as roofing, brick, stone, wood accents, soffits and evans. If you don’t want to change it, it should be considered part of the overall palette.
With stone or brick, work with colors to create good complementary colors. In the example below, the painted facade enhances the green tones of the stone, creating a soft exterior palette.
For a brick with red/brown undertones, you’re limited to soft tones or deep chocolate browns to make it work. Taupe or light gray allows you to experiment with blues, greens and neutrals. Of course, you can also paint your brick, in which case consider it a design or body color, depending on where it sits in your home (see #3 below).
Midcentury Modern Colors For Every Room In Your Home
Be careful when working on your roof if it is visible, as it is a large spread of one color that will affect the exterior paint colors you choose.
Brown roofs, especially if they have a red tint, are the most restrictive to work with, and like brick, you want to stick to neutrals. If your roof has strong red tones I would avoid blues and greens as they will add color but not in a good way! (Remember, your roof should not be the star of the show, just a supporting cast member!)
For blue or green roofs, try to find colors that are the same shade to create a cohesive design. Black and gray roofs have the easiest choice of body color for your home.
Your landscape can also play a role – if you have a beautiful red pine tree that you want to be a part of, you’ll want to avoid a red house. A house of coal or sea is a better choice to show its beauty in autumn.

Look out for your neighbors too – you don’t want to look like them, but you also don’t want to be known as the only pink house on the block.
Because sunlight can change the color of your paint colors, you should try a few options, and I recommend that you try painting all the exterior walls of your home with 2’x2′ squares.
North-facing walls or shaded areas tend to be darker because they receive less sunlight, while on south-facing walls, the color is more washed out by the sun. Be prepared to go lighter or darker to get the look you’re after.
