Navy Blue Paint Colors For Living Room – Home → Best Paint Colors → Colors → Blues: 2 Types and Where They Work Best
If you’re trying to pick a blue color for your walls but you just don’t like it, I bet I know why! Either blue doesn’t suit your room (which we’ll talk about below) or you’re looking at the wrong KIND of blue.
Navy Blue Paint Colors For Living Room
Blue likes to screw up two ways – green or purple. So depending on where your favorite blue is on the color wheel, it will slide between blue-green or blue-violet.
Living Room Makeover: ‘from Beige To Blue… I Love My Cosy Room!’
Mixing WITH green or purple – mixes with yellow (blue+yellow=green) or red (blue+red=purple), however, sometimes it’s easier to call it as we SEE.
There are also some blues that are quite blue, but they can be so easily influenced by the environment as well as personal perception, so today we focus on blue-green and blue-violet.
Do you see plain old blue, blue-green, or blue-purple in the bathroom photo above? If you guessed blue and green, you’re a winner, a chicken dinner winner! You are looking at Benjamin Moore Ocean Air which is a beautiful soft blue-green color.
Although blue-green is “technically” cooler than blue-violet, we know it’s not all about technical details when it comes to color impression. Blue-greens are softer and slightly warmer than blue-violets – go figure. And btw, this little detail can be very important if you’re thinking of painting “certain rooms” blue – which we’ll get to shortly.

So when you see blue-green, you should first see blue and green mixed together. Now, if you add more and more green, you’ll start moving those scales and end up with GREEN-BLUE, which means it’s a green leaning towards blue (think mint or aqua). In the last photo of the bedroom, you should see that the blue is a nice gray – which is common with the MOST POPULAR blues. However, it is actually a blue-green – a treasure called Benjamin Moore, Mount St. Anne.
The simple shot above shows Benjamin Moore’s Rocks of Gibraltar, which are a beautiful aquatic mix of blue-grey-green (see more in this blog post).
This next rocking horse photo shows Benjamin Moore’s starfish in all its blue-green glory!
Again, blue-violet is technically supposed to be a warmer color than blue-green, but it tends to feel cooler in a room – especially if you put it in a room it’s not intended for. That’s right, just because you WANT to paint a room a certain color (ie blue) doesn’t mean you SHOULD, and we’ll make it happen.

It’s interesting that I rarely talk about blue-purple in my E-design – it just doesn’t suit that many rooms/styles. And since I ONLY use images from my client E-design on my site, I don’t have many good photos of blue and purple projects – I rarely come across them.
HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean it won’t suit your room and in fact, most of the photos I have are of my houses – well, our last few homes actually…
Benjamin Moore steel wool is a great example of a blue-violet (with a lot of gray). I can’t even tell you how many people loved this wacky color!
When you see blue-violet, you should see blue – absolutely, but don’t be surprised if many people see purple!
Designer’s Favorite Blue Paint Colors For Your Home
In another of our homes, I’ve been playing around with a Benjamin Moore vibe, Anchor Navy – a navy that’s a little mauve…
Here’s the deal with Ali McBeal (I know, I’m totally dating myself), blue in a north facing room is a hard sell. Why? Well, blue is a cool color. The light facing north is a cool gray light with a blue glow. Combine the two and you have a damn cool room! Those northern lights will further enhance the cool tone of your blonde, leaving things a little warty.
Here’s Anchor Gray again in our last home which was extremely north facing (and cooler than Tim’s ex-girlfriend’s heart).
Blue-green, although COOLER than blue-violet, tends to be softer and warmer and suits a north-facing room better than blue-violets.
Best Summer Color Trends For 2020
An upstairs bedroom in a romantic country house shows us Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue, which is often mistaken for “blue” when it’s actually a blue-green color.
And btw, I think the same can be said for east facing rooms. Although not as cool looking, they are not warm rooms at all and prefer blue-green (so they tell me…or maybe it’s the wine).
If you’re really into blue-purple, then you’ll want to add texture and softness to the room to balance out that cool-on-cold look.
Notice how the red rug and gold accent pillow add balance to the cool steel wool look. In Anchor Gray photos, you’ll see the same gold color as well as texture to help balance the cool color tone and exposure.
Cool Brown And Blue Living Room Designs
“Mm Kylie, you’re telling me that north facing rooms don’t always go with blue and purple, yet YOU DESIGN A NORTH ROOM IN BLUE AND PURPLE!”
Realistically. The funny thing is, I’m generally not a fan of blue/purple, however, when we paint a room, it’s not always what WE want, it’s what the room wants.
For example, let’s visit my anchor family room. Note the carpet – gray with a soft purple undertone. Also note the intricate stone fireplace with gray-purple veins…
If I had chosen blue and green (which would have been WAY up there for me) it would have been a real mess. SO, for me the happy medium added some depth (which I ALWAYS love) and tilted the blue towards the purple a bit. I can’t say I’ve ever been CRAZY about the color, but it was a great happy medium between what I prefer and the specific needs of my room.
Living Room Paint Ideas To Transform Your Space With Colour
South-facing rooms go much better with blue – any color! Southern light can be SUPER warm, and you may even find that a well-chosen blue will help balance the visual warmth of a south-facing room.
The same can be said for west-facing rooms, but they will have more subdued/even light in the morning, intensifying from midday.
