Neutral Colors For Living Rooms – Traditional Indian designs are admired worldwide for their vibrant colours: purple and gold are often prominent, and generally bright colors tend to dominate.
But what if a space decorated with beautiful symbols of Indian culture could inspire a sense of well-being while following a neutral palette? Hilary Unger of Perianth Interior Design took on the challenge of transforming an Indian family’s Upper West Side duplex into a modern, beige-loving home that celebrates tradition and heritage.
Neutral Colors For Living Rooms
While the color scheme describes the apartment in an imperfect way, this was not expected before. At first, Unger planned to incorporate dark browns, but ended up favoring a monochrome palette dominated by metallics. Throughout the home, an intentional mix of silver and gold draws attention to other elements in the space, such as the light vanilla wood floors.

At the entrance, perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the house is the marble mosaic purchased from the Taj Mahal and placed on the wooden floor.
Behind the doors, the living room has been designed to be comfortable, clean and functional, but based on comfort. “At the touch of a button, a living room can transform from a wardrobe to a living room,” says Unger.
For neutral tones and subtle shimmer, Unger opted for a gold metallic leather sofa (each of the three chairs reclines and touches in the distance). The glass table is Italian in style and can be easily converted from a square to two rectangles with a hidden device. The wallpaper adds dimension next to the white walls and echoes the soft beige rug underfoot.
The window in the living room opens into the kitchen, and the furniture used: the table is extended, the dining room has several sliding doors, and the dining chairs can double as table and chairs. A decorative lamp (lit by a nearby lamp) brings a beautiful touch of gold to the beige and gray space.
