Paint Color To Match Ikea Black Brown

Paint Color To Match Ikea Black Brown – Our apartment is mainly furnished with IKEA furniture. We have a bunch of things we bought with our wedding money and the rest are things we had before we moved in together. We really like dark brown, so most of our items have this finish. However, we knowingly had a singles cutting block that was in plain unfinished wood.

After our wedding, we needed storage for all of our wonderful gifts. So we bought a dresser and small furniture to put the candles. The cinder block didn’t look good next to all the dark brown, so we decided to stain it. It was very easy to do because it was already incomplete.

Step 1: Very light sanding to ensure the stain is set

Step 2: Stain! We used General Finish Gel Stain in Java. We only need one pint for two layers in a set. It is important to let the stain dry overnight between coats. Apply using foam brushes.

Step 3: Spray. After letting the stain dry for a few days, we finished with Minwax Quick Dry Polyurethane. We apply one coat all over and second coat after using it during the shower. Also apply using foam brushes.

Look how well it matches the actual dark brown! You can hardly tell the difference! My only comment to those wanting to do a dark brown is that it looks more like a paint than a stain. The wood grain on the bottom doesn’t show as much as I would like. Overall, I think it’s the best this time around. Ikea used to sell matching colors but they stopped doing that. Anyone struggling to stain their Ikea furniture? I wanted to add molding to my Ikea Billy bookcase, so I searched the internet for a stain color answer to match the brown-black, but I decided to try my own formula and see if it would work. We keep our crystal in Billy’s library in our dining room. This is the best close-up photo I could find:

Here you can see the dining room on the left. It’s very easy. This photo was before we took the second gate. We are bad Ikea shoppers, people! We have a white door and a dark brown door. We actually went back to Ikea twice because we bought the wrong color once and the wrong style another time.

So I bought a cheap 2 3/4″ crown molding from ACE Hardware. I wanted to dress it up a bit.

After installing it, I had to paint it. I tried Minwax in Jacobin, which is a dark brown stain. I applied two coats, but it was not dark. It was browner than the color of the library.

So I probably did something stupid, I don’t know because you’re supposed to mix stain and paint, but I applied Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations Bond Coat in Tudor (dark brown with purple undertones). This stuff is paint, but it looks like a gel stain. I used a small foam brush.

Then it wasn’t dark enough, so I used Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations Bond Coat in Black and brushed it on with a foam brush.

I am very proud of it! It looks like a dark stain, no color. It turned out like this (some photos are with flash, some are not):

It should be noted that the type of wood you use will take on a different shade. It can absorb more or less. We believe the tree crown molding is made of pine. Can You Paint Ikea Furniture? Yes!

Thanks to Mohawk Consumer Products for sponsoring this article. As always, my opinions are based 100% on my use of the product.

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know that I’m a fan of IKEA furniture. In fact, 90% of the furniture in my home office is from Ikea, including this popular IKEA Malm hack and my IKEA desk hack. Our dining chairs are from IKEA. This table and chairs in my sweet Avery room are from IKEA. All the pieces that make up these “built-ins” in my sweet Atli bedroom are from IKEA (PS: you can read all about the secret to painting IKEA laminate furniture in this article).

Seriously, I could go on. And while I’ve always been totally impressed with the quality of IKEA pieces, the truth is that we’ve had the pieces for so long that they’ve had dents and scratches, which I fully expect (with any piece of furniture, for the record). And while I was happy to discover a trick for painting IKEA furniture a while back, I never had a better way to fix those dents and scratches, until now 🙂

I’ve been honored to be a brand ambassador for Mohawk Consumer Products for quite some time and have been a huge fan of every Mohawk product I’ve tried. But when Mohawk said they were releasing a 3-in-1 repair stick with colors designed to perfectly match the most common IKEA furniture colors, I wanted to embrace them (and I would have, but we live far away – seriously, Mohawk is full of the nicest people you’ll ever meet). ! Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to try the Mohawk 3-in-1 Repair Sticks! I’ve used them many times before, but today I finally decided to document the process as I tackled the repairs on my IKEA Galant shelves in my office. They are the usual IKEA “dark brown” color. A while back, I thought it would be a good idea to hang a curtain rod and curtain to hide what’s on the shelves. But in the end, I hated the way it turned out, so I removed the rod and hardware, leaving big, ugly holes where the screws went into the top corners of the shelves. I adjusted the holes in minutes and got a perfect color match. Read on to find out how I did it.

If you prefer video tutorials, you can watch one of the official Mohawk 3-in-1 Repair Stick demos, like when I repaired a black IKEA office chair below. But there is also a written version of this DIY furniture repair tutorial for those who prefer written instructions and step-by-step photos.

1) First, use the built-in leveling cap to remove the damaged area of your furniture to remove any surface damage.

2) Then shake the repair stick 3 in 1 for about 60 seconds to mix the color. Next, press the tip of the marker onto a paper towel until the ink covers the entire tip of the marker.

3) Use a paint marker to replace any color lost from the damage you are repairing.

4) Then use a filler stick to fill in any lumps, bumps or holes. Hold it at a 45 degree angle and press firmly while rubbing the filler stick back and forth over the damaged area. Continue rubbing until you get full coverage. Make sure all blanks are filled completely. I recommend erring on the side of excess 🙂

This is it! I told you fixing up furniture was easy! But that’s not really the best part. The best part is that with Mohawk’s 3-in-1 repair sticks, you can perfectly match your IKEA paint or stain, something I couldn’t do before this product came out. 5 minutes away
