But first, here are some pictures of our kitchen. It worked and served us well in many ways. However, it’s old and not quite what I wanted. I know I can make it better with a few simple changes.
Our kitchen was like many other kitchens of the time. It’s filled with 1980s oak veneer cabinets, a dark blue upper cabinet that makes the room feel heavier, and smaller light brown countertops that harmonize with the cabinets and a small window above the sink.
In the kitchen, some things go well. The cupboards are in good condition, for example. And while the countertop is a little bland, it doesn’t compete with cabinetry or flooring. That’s the start!
First, I knew I had to paint the walls. The existing dark greens and reds don’t compete with the orange oak cabinets, but they are dark and heavy in an already dark room. I want to make things easier.

By painting the soffit creamy white, the kitchen is instantly more open, bright and airy – amazing! The soffit blends into the ceiling and almost disappears, making the ceiling taller.

I also painted the trim white for the perfect finish. Fresh white trim and trim around doors and windows accent the cream walls and accentuate their lovely muted colors. The whole effect is a clean, fresh, light and airy kitchen!
