Paint Colors That Go With Wood Trim – Wood trim is a classic feature of many older homes. While some homeowners love the warmth and character, others find it boring and dark. If you have a hard time liking wood trim, the wall paint has created a visual distraction for you. For example, a beautiful beige may go well with orange wood (same shade family on the color wheel), while a soft gray-blue provides more contrast and drama (opposite shade family). That’s because it helps visually expand the space and gives potential buyers a more neutral canvas to envision as their own home. This is what makes neutral colors a great choice for pairing with wood trim.

The warmth of cherry, mahogany and other red-stained woods can add a lot of beauty and depth to a space. This red is more visible in some lights, sometimes the wood looks a little pink or even purple.
With just a hint of some taupe (such as Benjamin Moore Pale Oak) and some warm brown, a small hint of purple softness (Benjamin Moore Collingwood or Abalone) works well with this rich wood shade. Red wood tones also go well with beige that is slightly pinkish-orange (Sherwin-Williams Kilim Beige).
Molding And Trim Make An Impact

Orange-toned woods may fall a bit more on the yellow or red side of the color wheel, but their primary color is still in the orange family.
Orange wood stain works well with colors in the same color family – orange! These include light, subtle beiges that aren’t too warm (Benjamin Moore Muslin and Soft Cream and Sherwin-Williams Navajo White and Soft Tan).
A warm gray can add a nice accent to orange wood (Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist), but it might be a little more contrast than you’d like in a home for sale.

With medium-heat oak, “you need some weight and substance,” says Bonnie Crims, an architectural color consultant in Concord, MA. Gray-blue often works well (for example, Benjamin Moore’s Buckland Blue, shown above with Harbor Mist). Or, Krimes suggests, go for a medium shade with a green soil that will “calm and tone the wood.” Warm shades associated with golden yellow, terra cotta, or red are other options (see Best Paint Colors for Historic Homes). Misty Yeomans, color marketing manager for Glidden Paint, chose crimson red for an oak-paneled bedroom in her home.
Dark Paint In Small Spaces
With dark reddish-brown wood, consider a jewel tone or saturated shade to stand out, says Sarah MacLean, color expert at Dunn-Edwards. “I also love classic neutral white with dark trim and dark flooring,” she says. This can be an especially good option in areas where there is not much natural light.
With pale wood trim that looks almost whitewashed, Crims recommends Benjamin Moore’s Taffeta Green or coastal shades of blue or green for quieter moments. Or try a light pinkish-gray like Sherwin-Williams’ White Dogwood to enhance the Scandinavian vibe.

Let’s talk about how to decorate your home with wood trim. Many older homes around Boston have it, and people’s first instinct is to paint it white. Now I know I’m a big fan of white trim, it’s crisp and clean. Also, it looks good with almost any style of decoration. Dark wood trim has a reputation for looking old or dated – but I’m not sure that’s true. When you choose the right fabric for your style, a home with authentic wood trim can go from an elegant-classic vibe to an eclectic-boho vibe, depending on your style.
Standard Color Guide
I’m so excited for my sister and her fiance to buy their first home, which is the inspiration for this post! It’s a charming little bungalow that reminds me of the first house Ben and I bought together. And then… Moot wood. Everyone asks the big question: “Are you going to paint it white?”. As you can see in the photo below, his house has rich woodwork and bold details that tell the story of how the house was built. Not a detail you want to slap on some white latex paint and call it a day. If you do – hey it’s your house, make you really happy! I’m so glad they decided to cut it after living like this for a while. If you change your mind, you can always decide to paint it.
All the wallpaper is down and the paint is up! He decided to do the entire kitchen/dining room and living room in classic gray by Benjamin Moore. I will definitely update with pictures soon!
The dining room overlooks the living room. I love the column. Even the tree is not this orange, only the quality of the list image in person. Notice how beautifully the light flows, which leads me to believe that lighter or darker colors would work in one of these rooms.
It also comes with very old wallpaper with beautiful old cut details. Old wallpaper + real wood can distort the perception and vision of how to achieve an updated aesthetic with wood trim. It’s been wallpaper removal week, and while I helped a little, I thought my time (and manicures 😉 ) would be better spent helping develop a plan/vision for their new space. I made two e-desis downstairs, one for the living room and one for their dining room. First
