Paint Colours For North Facing Rooms

Paint Colours For North Facing Rooms – I recently received a letter from a woman who was trying to choose a paint color for the north side of her room.

The back of our house all faces north, with a large hill on top behind us. This is a townhouse, so the two rooms are the kitchen and the living room. The kitchen has a bay window of sorts and gets some light from the west, but the nest is pretty dark except for about an hour for two weeks a year. :]

I recently painted my living room, and thinking I wanted to brighten up the space and make it bigger, I painted it white. Our sofa is brown leather with a beige rug. I hate this. It is cold, boring and depressing, not light and airy.

The Most Popular Paint Colors For 2022

If white doesn’t feel airy in the room, what paint color would work for this dark, north-facing room to give it the look I want? Thanks for any light on this.

Ah, yes, the room to the north paints the color. Susan is actually another of the characters I created, and apart from the furniture, she describes the origins of our old townhouse. You can see it here.

And it is true. When we first moved into the house, everything was covered in Benjamin Moore porcelain white paint. And that included our base to the north, which faced a large hill with a tree.

Chinese white has a lot of gray in it, and that’s exactly what it looked like in this little bump. He looked gray. And if you have a dark and/or north-facing room and you want a light gray color, Chinese white can be taken into account.

The Best Colours For North, South East And West Facing Rooms

I think Benjamin Moore’s China White paint is a great use in this gorgeous Beth Webb bathroom.

The first thing to remember is that a dark room is never light and bright.

This is from an external light source – the sun. Of course, artificially we can make it quite bright. But you can’t make a room into something it isn’t.

Paint Colours For North Facing Rooms

Here are my thoughts I’ve gathered over the years about north-facing rooms and rooms with less natural light.

The Perfect Pink Beige Paint Color For Our Living Room

Generally, a cool gray light will prevail in a north facing room. And it will have gray, blue light, no matter if there are many or few windows. The difference would be that if there are several large windows and no obstructions, you can have a fairly bright room on the north side. However, most rooms facing north are not bright.

Also, to add to the difficulty, your room may not face north. It can be tilted to the east or west. And there may be some exhibits in the room.

The worst thing was being in a room that faced north at one end and south at the other. The result was a variety of shades, many. In this case, I recommend warm white.

And this means you will have the most constant light. You probably already know that this is why artists prefer to work in north-facing studios.

The Best White Paint And How To Choose It

A room facing south is like a room facing north in the morning because the sun does not have direct access to the windows. And therefore, you get a cool shadow lighting. Except this morning. In the late evening, of course, you will see the opposite.

Therefore, I think it is more difficult to work with lighting and a room facing south. However, I don’t think it’s worth mentioning because most people like to have a lot of natural light in their rooms. And it is easier to block it than to create it.

Well, you have a sunny warm south location. Why doesn’t anyone mention this? And why don’t they mention that a room facing south can be as dark and gloomy as a room facing north in the morning? Trust me. I know because I live with it!

But a room like my bedroom, for example, with three large windows facing south and west, is still quite bright. Even on a cloudy day.

Brighten Up A South Facing Room

This is what I saw in my bedroom with a beautiful Benjamin Moore white dove mural around town and the door on a gloomy day like today.

The color is very even and yes, dark, but the light also brings out the yellow of the white dove, so the color reads like a nice cream. Not white enough. If you want a white dove to look extremely white, combine it with blue black or navy blue. In this case, it will look very bright.

While we’re on the subject of our living room, I’d like to discuss a major topic: This living room looks more or less what it did when Benjamin Moore’s Tropical Disc painting is gone.

In the case of the old bedroom shown above, there is a piece of stucco where the tropical afternoon stops.

Common Reasons For Paint Color Mishaps

However, now it is gone. The lack of a barrier definitely makes the ceiling higher. And the room becomes lighter and more spacious. However, I noticed that the room looks more rectangular. If I lie on the bed in front of the two bookcases, this wall seems closer to me than when the room was a tropical disc, which distorts the shape of this almost square room.

To be honest, the room doesn’t seem big or small. It seems to look different! Very interesting, I think. In addition, it is much less cut and therefore more comfortable. I love it!

Back to our topic as there are a few more things to consider when choosing a paint color for a north facing room.

Paint Colours For North Facing Rooms

The first is the size of the room. Large rooms look better painted in light colors, whether they are bright and sunny or dark. It is not complete, because I can show you great rooms that are not painted white. However, they usually contain a healthy amount of white. This is one of my favorite examples of this.

And that brings me to the second important point, which is to stop expecting paint color to cure everything that ails you. As for the decoration, yes. It is not a cure. This is only one factor.

Please read this post when you have a second to learn what is more important than paint color.

The colors of a north-facing library may differ from a north-facing bedroom. (This post asks if gray can be used in a north facing room)

Or how about a north facing dining room?

And fourth, the fact that its visibility at night does not matter. Good? So if it’s a room that’s almost always used when it’s dark, whose face is at the windows?

Also, there’s always some crazy lighting situation that defies the laws of physics, or so it seems. Or you know that the room should be X color, but your husband hates X color.

Yes, mostly. Since the northern light is cooler, if there are any undertones of brown, green, blue, or lavender on the paint color, whether it is down or up, they are likely to be great. And contrary to what I’ve read, they may or may not look gray. Color can look bright!

However, sometimes a darker, grayer or brighter effect is desired. I must have told the story about the bedroom to the north that everything we put in there looks green. Even the pink looked green! In the end, we ended up with a beautiful cream that was like the color of yellow celery and it was so nice.

How To Pick A Neutral, Off White Paint Colour

Please don’t ask me which one because I can’t tell you if my life depended on it. But it could be Benjamin Moore Mains 2152-70. It is a good color in a dark or northern room. You can see photos of mayonnaise in this post with some of my favorite paint colors.

Since the light is cooler in a north facing room, we don’t want our room to look too cold so gray and blue colors may not look good in your north facing room.

However, if you like the idea of having a light blue bedroom, the Laurel Home paint collection has some light blue colors that you can try. (Samples first.)

Wickham Gray – We did this color a few years ago in a very dark entry/base room with almost no natural light. The darkness brought out the blue-green in this cool gray, but it was beautiful.

We didn’t use it in the dark, but in the north, northeast, east family room, dining area, and windowless kitchen. This part was posted ten years ago and it blows my mind!
