PREPARATION: If you have a shop or vacuum cleaner with a broom attachment…scan the brick facade to remove cobwebs or fine dust. It doesn’t really matter, but if you have OCD like me… go for it.
If you want a transparent look, pour a small amount of paint into a separate container and add about 25% water to it. So… if you had 1 cup of paint… that would be 1/4 cup of water. 🙂 First of all, don’t dilute all the colors!!! You do not yet know how much water you need to achieve the desired results. So, start by mixing a small amount and paint ONLY the brick so that if you don’t like it, you won’t fix it as if you started right in the middle of a brick facade. And be careful not to add too much water.

Debbie used Annie Sloan Clear Wax on Primer Red and General Finishes High Performance Top Coat with Satin on Java Gel. We love it!
Jasmine Hagan did a great job on her fireplace. He painted the top of the brick pink with a dark walnut stain and then used the water-based Old White Chalk Paint® to whiten the stain. I then painted the top coat with Duck Egg Blue Chalk Paint® and sealed with clear wax. Jasmine wrote to us: “I don’t regret anything!!!”
Annie Sloan painted the brick around her fireplace with original paint from the Chalk Paint® kit. He dilutes the paint with water to achieve a more washable technique. She said they bought a house with an old, heavy, dark fireplace that didn’t fit in our living room. After playing a little with the pastel colors in the “original”, we are very pleased with the result! We add a gas fireplace after the holidays and paint the top coat with a lighter white coat.
Roxane and her dog used Paris Gray Chalk Paint® right out of the box! They then diluted the white wash with water and the other graphite wash with water. After painting the entire fireplace in Paris Gray and it dried, she took the Graphitewash paint and ran it over the veins of the stone to show the texture. She then uses White Wash to soothe him as needed. Chalk Paint Fireplace Hearth — Spruce & Fjell
Suzanne painted white with Annie Sloan’s Old White Chalk Paint® mixed with water. Approximately 1 part paint to 3 parts water. He sprays the paint in batches and then uses paper towels to strategically pick up and remove the excess. Check out Suzanne’s blog HERE!
Eileen used a pastel version of AnnieSloan in pure white and then an old white to soften the highlights. Then randomly crack to reveal the texture and color of the brick. She loves it now!
Maria did a great job! He applied French Linen Chalk Paint® to the floor tiles and then applied laundry detergent (1 part) to dry the French linen, removing the excess immediately. I used the same conditioner for a brick fireplace.
Chalk Paint®️ by Annie Sloan helped Andrew transform a section of his home he didn’t like. She had a traditional red brick on top and wanted to brighten up the space, so she used Annie Sloan Paris Gray Chalk Paint® and then a color called Pure (white) on random tiles to break up the monotonous Paris Grey. How To Whitewash A Brick Fireplace — Suzanne Bagheri @the Painted Drawer
Andrew sweeps and vacuums around his tile to remove all dust and debris first. How much cleaning you need depends on how dirty the area around your brick is. Also, depending on the sheen of your bricks – does that mean they’re pre-sealed or smooth and unsealed…. On shiny tiles, the pipes don’t get dirty as easily and will usually separate from the sealed tile with only soap and water. Be careful when using strong tile seal cleaners to avoid damaging the seal. Tiles with a dull, smooth appearance are glazed tiles and are harder to clean because dirt and grime can easily get into crevices and crevices.
Be sure to let the wet tile dry completely for several days when using the cleaner.
Andrew of Paris Gray Chalk Paint®️ by Annie Sloan and Annie Sloan used a small convex brush and painted over the brick. This brush is great for this type of application as the large bristles can act like a mop and really get into tile nooks and grout lines.
Be aware that some bricks may be drier than others and the paint will peel off. Depending on the opacity of the look, you may need more than one coat of paint.
How To Whitewash A Stone Fireplace
Andrew then takes Pure Chalk Paint® and dilutes it a little by adding a small amount of water and then selectively lightens the special bricks for a more subtle effect. This allows for a more interesting look than all Paris Grey.
