The kitchen cabinets in our rental property were in great condition, so why not save some money and give them a fresh look? Full announcement! It’s a difficult task, to say the least. Personally, I don’t like painting kitchen cabinets (painting furniture is my thing 😉), but it was worth it! Will I do it again? Yes! Will I enjoy doing it? Probably not 😅 but it will save me money and change the venue! The work is worth it!
As with everything, prep work is key. I cannot stress enough how important this is. If you don’t take anything away from reading this post, be sure to take it away…prepare before painting! Farmhouse Kitchen Paint Colors That Go With Oak Cabinets
Here’s what you need to successfully paint your kitchen cabinets and give your kitchen a fresh look!
When removing cabinet doors, mark them. You can just use duct tape and number them or letters and leave one piece inside the closet and the other on the door. This way you will know where the door goes when you want to put it back.
If you are reusing your equipment, be sure to place it in a zippered bag so you don’t lose anything. Keep them all together. This includes all your bridges, buttons and hinges. If you reuse jars, be sure to label them. What I’ve learned while working on furniture is that sometimes, if you don’t use the same conviction, the doors won’t line up.
Since we wanted to center the upper cabinets with the window, we decided to remove them completely and work with them closed.
How To Paint Your Cabinets Like The Pros With Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
You must ensure that you remove all dirt and grime from the surface. The curd cutter does a great job of removing fat.
Before sanding, check all surfaces for holes or gouges that you want to repair. For small holes, use wood putty. For more damage, Bondo or Kwikwood work very well.
If you are using the same equipment, you do not need to fill the holes. If you choose new hardware, make sure the dimensions match and it has the same screw pattern. For a different size or screw pattern, you must fill in one hole and drill another to match the new size.
The original cabinets did not have knobs or knobs, so we drilled holes for the new hardware we purchased. I love buying equipment on Amazon. They have great deals on bulk hardware like the handles we bought here for this cabinet.

Use masking tape and cloth to protect panels, walls, and ceilings. Sometimes I’m too lazy to draw flowers, but this saves you time and avoids confusion when drawing. So definitely don’t skip this step!
You can also make a highlighter. We haven’t used this Jasco Sander deglosser, but I’ve heard a lot about it. This can be done instead of grinding. This will smooth the surface and the paint will adhere better to the surface. If you have filled in any holes, you will need to sand those areas to smooth the surface.
After sanding comes the primer. The primer allows the paint to adhere to the surface. One coat is usually sufficient (I always like to apply two coats), but if you have dark cabinets I recommend at least two coats. In this way, you will avoid discoloration of the paint.
Place cabinet doors in paint pyramids so they don’t touch the table so you can prime and paint the sides.
How To Paint Your Cabinets In A Weekend (without Sanding Them)
After the door is dry, turn it over and paint the other side. Definitely with bandits. You can use brushes for details and rollers for large flat surfaces. Lightly sand the surface with an emery pad (220 grit) before painting.
Use acrylic latex paint. You can create a semi-gloss or satin finish. I love the satin finish. A glossy finish will show many imperfections and a flat finish is difficult to clean.
Using tripods, you can paint the cabinet doors the same way you did for the primer, or you can spray paint if possible.
We assembled this temporary cabinet door suspension system and sprayed paint. We pre-drilled small holes in the top of the top cabinet and the bottom of the bottom cabinet and hung them with 7/8″ hooks. When you put the cabinet doors back on, you won’t be able to see the little holes because they’re on the top and bottom of the hinges.

We used HomeRite spray paint to spray paint the doors and roller painted the rest of the cabinets.
After the paint is completely dry, apply a water-based polyurethane varnish. I like to use Minwax water based polyacrylic. Oil-based polyurethane will yellow over time, so stick with water-based polyurethane. I like to do at least three layers of polyacrylate. Let the poly dry completely. Lightly sand between individual coats using a sanding block (grit 220). Sanding between coats allows the polyacrylic backing to bond. It can be applied with a brush or sprayed. I like to use a sieve when spraying so there are no clumps.
After the polyacrylic has dried, you can install hinges, cabinet doors and fittings. We drilled new hardware as I mentioned and added hidden lanes. I will share more information about the secret stripes soon! After backing up all your equipment, you can enjoy your new kitchen!
