Having trouble choosing the right exterior paint color for your home? I’m here to help and guide you through every step of choosing the right paint color combination for your home’s exterior. I’ll make it easy for you, I promise!
The number one painting question I’ve received over the years is about choosing exterior paint colors, because it’s one of the most difficult decisions you can make when it comes to painting your home. You want your home to have great curb appeal and you don’t want to make any color mistakes. If you follow my seven steps below, I promise you’ll avoid common mistakes and make exterior paint color decisions that look great! Stay with me on this one!
The first thing you need to do when deciding what color to paint your home’s exterior is to first choose a color shade. When I say “undertone,” I mean: do you want a light, medium, or dark color in the body of your home? At this point, you don’t need to consider anything other than deciding whether you want a light or white color, a medium or medium tone, or a dark color.
For most of you, choosing a shade is an easy, instant decision and you know immediately whether you want a light or dark colored home. However, some of you may be unsure and open to all the nuances and need a little help in making this decision. It will help if you search Pinterest for house exteriors for inspiration in determining which shade would work best for your home. For example, if you have a ranch style home, search for “ranch style home exteriors” on Pinterest to see all the different color options and get inspiration.

Before you proceed to choose the color, you will need to think about the color of your roof. If you have a neutral black or gray, you don’t have to worry as much about color clashing. Unfortunately, I have a dark brown ceiling with slight red undertones, so colors like green or blue undertones would not suit me and would clash. For those of you who have a roof with undertones of red, tan, green, or blue-gray in your shingles, you should definitely consider the color of your roof when choosing your exterior paint color palette.
If you’re like me and have a dark brown shingle roof with a red undertone, you’ll want to use a very neutral main color to keep your home safe. If you have green or blue-gray toned tiles, you will have a little more freedom and avoid color clashes if you choose a neutral color or with a slight hint of tile color to blend, complement and not clash. If you have a black roof, you can do almost anything.
If you have stone or brick in your home, you also need to consider the strong tones you find in your brick or stone. If your home is brick and you just need to choose a trim color, I would combine the lightest, medium, or darkest color found in the stone/brick and use that as the trim color.
If your home is not brick/stone and is half stone/brick or simply has brick/stone accents, you have much more latitude with color options for your home’s exterior color. As long as your body color has a slight hint of brick/stone tone, you shouldn’t have any clashing issues. For example, if your brick has a warm tone and you want to match the gray to the color of your house, choose a light, warm gray rather than a cool gray. This way, the warmth of the gray is what will bond/blend the new body color to the brick. What makes sense?
Choosing Exterior Paint Colors For Your Home
Next, once you’ve thought about your roof color and chosen a shade, you’ll need to consider the impact of light on exterior paint colors, which is different from choosing interior colors. I’m going to save you a lot of time by saying that daylight/sunlight will drastically change the cool/blue exterior color, which is what happens to a paint color when there is lots of light. As crazy as it sounds, you will need to reheat the exterior color at least 2-3 times to get a balanced color that doesn’t look cold or blue. Let me show you what I mean.
When it came time to paint the exterior of the pool house outdoor kitchen, I had to choose a color about 3 times warmer than I wanted in the final desired color. I wanted a final color that resembled Sherwin Williams’ “On the Rocks”, but due to the abundance of light that affects exterior paint colors, I had to choose a color 3 times warmer to avoid it does not turn blue or cold.
Yes, my pool house was painted Burmese beige, but because of the light it looks like SW On the Rocks.
Isn’t it crazy what light does to exterior colors? Therefore, when selecting colors, try colors that are at least 1-2 warmer than the color you would like to have. My final color ended up being 3x warmer. Keep in mind that if you want a white exterior, you will also need to choose a warmer white, otherwise your home will have a bluish tone.
How To Choose Exterior Schemes
As you refine your shade, think about the color of your roof and know that it will need to be warmer due to the abundance of outdoor light. Next, you’ll need to decide on an actual color for the exterior body of your home. It’s helpful to research similar home styles to get an idea of the possibilities. I have a Pinterest board here with all the exterior house paint colors that can really help you visualize a color.
Now that you’ve chosen a color, there are so many variables when it comes to the impact of color on the exterior, including the orientation of your home and how tinted your home is, that it’s impossible to choose a body color with confidence. .. without tasting or looking. in his samples in the morning, noon and
