I regret not taking a full “before” photo of my nightstand when I bought it. I saw it at KSL and was immediately impressed with the legs, rugged body, size and excellent detail. They came out of a trendy SLC hotel to decorate the rooms. I went with them and it was only $40 each time. Talk about a deal. If you’re not familiar with the Henredon brand, go to their website and tell me what you think of these babies, $40 each. When I picked them up they were like buttercream with some golden glaze. It wasn’t until I got home and looked at them in daylight that I realized they were a very yellow cream color with an almost greenish sheen. nausea

So, step one: I sanded. Most of the time, if a piece is in good condition and there is no peeling paint, I start right away without sanding. In this case, several pieces of paint were missing, leaving small holes. Also, if I do decide to stain, I’m curious to see what kind of wood it hides. I used a power sander on all flat surfaces without any detail (tops and drawer fronts). I used very fine sandpaper and sanded all the other rounded areas by hand. I avoided hand-carved details altogether. If sanding is required for decorative details, use steel wool.

Step Two: I sprayed the primer. Using Rustoleum Painter’s First Touch Grey, I sprayed a few light coats on these until I got good coverage. It takes only one and a half cans for two stands.
Step 3: I spray paint. After the primer was completely dry, I painted on some light stems, using Rustoleum Painter’s Granite Touch Spray Paint (satin finish).
I made a lot of mistakes between here and the next steps. Mistake #1: I tried a different style similar to the Thomasville dresser and hated the shelves. Fortunately, I had to repeat steps 2 and 3 again to get back to where I started.
I rolled a few coats on the booth using Ralph Lauren’s Regent Metallic Silver Base Paint and a Ralph Lauren Metallic Finisher Roller. This product is designed to add your own color. My lovely friend gave me a leftover jar that he used (and chose not to add color), so I decided to try that too, it still looks great in a shimmery gray like my foundation. the color

Mistake #3: So I tried a regular roller and it was still horrible. A roller continues to pull the previous roller.
After a stop at Home Depot (to dump the leftover paint in my bag), I learned that RL makes a special roll for this specific application.

I thought spending $7 on a stupid roller was just a gimmick, but seriously, you have to have it to get the effect the paint is trying to create. Pay me $7. After several layers of rolling, the stands looked like this:
The finish was exactly what I wanted, but there was a huge difference between the primer and the shine of the metal surface.
