Use one of these colors to brighten up your wardrobe, paint interior doors, or repurpose old items. There aren’t 50 shades of gray, but there are plenty to choose from.

First, let’s get to know General Fish Milk Paint. Expanding the color palette for 2019, GF maintains popular colors and traditional choices. With this in mind, they added three more ashes to the mix. As they say, “Grey is the new white.”

Here are seven shades of GF’s gray dot Millstone is on the warmer side of gray, and “gray”—a popular exception—leans toward beige. Reverend Grey, the lightest of the three new shades, is similar to Benjamin Moore’s beloved Revere Pewter. Seagull Gray is something I love, a gray that blends well with everything else. Empire Gray is a big seller of GF’s chalk style paint line and has been discontinued, so they decided to revamp it and introduce the milk paint line this year.

Good Grey, GF’s third new gray for 2019, is a medium black without blue or green undertones. Tried and true colors are Driftwood and Queenstown Grey, the two deepest blacks of the group.

Elderly Gray is a gray that looks good on its own, but could work with a gift or two. The gray middle peak of the country covers the third – a nice contrast to the slightly darker gray. Charcoal, the darkest of the three colors, is a deep, smoky black.

Galvanized is their pre-mixed gray, but we’ve chosen seven new ingredients to “mix” to create other shades. 611 Steam combines 2 parts clean cloth, 1 part dog bone and 1 part gray. When slightly warm, putty uses 1 part dog bone and 1 part galvanized. Silver Lab is a wonderful gray mix of 3 parts galvanized, 2 parts clay and 1 part black dog.

Mountain Mist is a gray mix of galvanized steel and Roanoke rain. Calm Gray Mist uses 3 parts Roanoke Rain and 1 part Black Dog. Gunmetal is a deep, blue-gray that is 1 part blue and 1 part dust. Coal dust completes the list – 2 parts black dog and 1 part galvanized.

If you’ve been around the blog for a while, you know that one of my favorite DIY projects is painting old furniture. And my products are salt colors. I love how easy it is to use and it works great for me. But the other day I went to Home Depot and saw pen paint. Yes, paint salt in a can. Have you heard this before?! I feel like I’ve been really out for a while now, so maybe I’m behind the curve, but holy cow ink paint in a can! Of course, I’ll have to try it and see how it compares to the regular salt color. So, today I’m sharing what I tested on a small side table and a full review of this pen.

One of the things I love most about sandblasting is that you don’t have to remove the sand before starting your paint job. You don’t need a primer, which changes the painting process. So when I bought the salt spray paint, I wanted to see if it would allow me to skip the same steps and get better results. I found an old side table, no sanding or priming, and it was done with Rust-Oleum Sacked Spray Paint in Aged Gray.

Coverage is good with this chalky paint, but you have to build it up slowly. I was a bit disappointed with the first coat – you can tell it’s rough and very light in terms of coverage when it’s first applied. However, when I applied the second coat, I noticed that not only did it last longer, but the coverage was even better. So I recommend two courses, maybe three depending on what you do. Allow each coat to dry completely before adding another.

I was very interested to see how well the salt paint held the table without sanding or starting. As you can see in this shot, I found that it went over the top in some places and went smoothly in others. Printing paint can be difficult to get the right application and this is no exception. But I’m happy to say that the second coat covered the small dark spots and I ended up with a good application.

With regular chalk paint, it’s very dry and hard to finish – that’s why you have to wax it. With this spray paint, I was impressed with the quality and clean finish, no wax required. Yes! True, matte, but smooth and soft to the touch. No wax is a huge plus in my book.

Overall, I would say that this pen print is great. At first I wasn’t too impressed, but after the second coat, I was really happy with the look. No sanding, no priming, no wax required, just spray and go. And I was able to add something heavy to the black paper with no problem, which is another plus. I can’t imagine how much more expensive this is than my usual Annie Sloan nail polish. I think it works the same way as normal salt paint. The trick is to make sure you apply it in thin coats, even coats, which is sometimes difficult to do with spray paint. For reference, I used an entire can for this paint project, so you’ll want to grab a few cans for something bigger.
