Rustoleum Gilded Brass Spray Paint – I compared six metallic brass and gold spray paint to find the perfect brass finish and top three picks!

Brass and gold finishes have come back into fashion in a big way over the years. They aren’t going anywhere anytime soon!

I’m talking about a warmer, more versatile brass color that looks great in light fixtures and accessories, not the super shiny brass that so many of us have had on our doorknobs or light fixtures over the years. 🙂

I ransacked the house one last time to get rid of the bright brass lamp. I don’t mind the look now, but the warmer brass tones definitely look more realistic.

I’ve been wanting to compare some brass and gold spray paints, so I’ve compiled six metallic spray paint picks over the past few months:

I thought there would be a bigger selection – but I found these six after many trips to several hardware stores. Both Rust-oleum and Krylon are quality spray paints with great durability!

Many people have “gold” in their names, but they have what I think is more of a brassy sound. But I found the gold and brass spray paint to be interchangeable.

I decided to try it so you can see the color of the side. I was really showing a slight difference between each spray paint.

I grabbed three types of surfaces — scrap wood, coated wood, and metal and glued them to the pieces. I haven’t used it the first time on bare wood or metal.

I want to show you the results during the day and indoors — remember that your light source will change color! Incandescent lights (usually yellow) will also change the appearance of spray paint, as will wall paint.

Here’s the thing, apparently there are many shades of this metallic color, just like in real life. For this experiment, I was looking for the most classic brass tones.

The second Rust-oleumUniversal spray paint, Metallic Sunlit Brass, is next and has a more traditional brass look, but is slightly brighter:

Side note – I hate this type of spray. I always find the nozzle doesn’t spray well and is uncomfortable to use.

Next up, Rust-oleumMetallic Gold with a bright, shiny finish is a gorgeous shade that leans more towards a gorgeous gold finish:

Next up, one of my favorites! This metallic warm gold rust-oleum spray paint is a perfect mid-tone brass in all media:

Easy Styrofoam Christmas Tree Diy

It’s also very easy. This nozzle is better and the spray paint covers well.

I love the nozzle – application is so easy! However, I’m not happy with the coverage and the color is neither gold nor brass, at least compared to others.

I wanted to try out my top three favorites with some hanging metal birds I’ve had lying around forever. I can use it anywhere in the closet.

My two favorites are the two main metallic colors – both champagne bronze and warm gold:

Painting A Bathroom Vanity (without Sanding!)

I think the name is interesting – I will change it. 🙂 The name Champagne goes with lighter colors, and warm gold goes with darker brass/gold tones. It looks more like an antique brass color to me.

Of course Rust-oleumMetallic Warm Gold spray paint can be third from the right in a series of six:

It doesn’t sound flat, but it has some shimmer and nuance that the other two don’t have. This is a great paint for brass!

That’s fun! I hope you find it useful. Here are the colors I used from left to right if you’re interested:

Found a brass/gold spray paint that you use and love? I’d love to hear about that! I found my pick in this slightly warm gold.

If you want more highlight than full coverage, check out my post on how to use Rub ‘n Buff:

You can use it to transform large objects, but it’s a great way to add depth or detail to any object! Test the best gold spray paint products, rank them best to worst and compare them to real gold and brass hardware to help you with your next paint project.

Since my favorite gold spray paint became scarce, I have been searching for the most convincing color for all metal objects – doorknobs, bathroom faucets, furniture, lamps and sculptures.

How We Painted Antique Door Hardware — Saguaro West

Over the past year, whenever I’ve been gathering supplies for a project, I’ve grabbed a nice coat of gold spray paint in the hardware aisle to use. And I have painted it with too much only to find that the gold looks completely fake and plastic and just BAD!

So I took one for the team to test 8 different brass spray paint and gold finish and compared with some real pieces of brass hardware to determine the final “winner”.

I was so proud of this idea for a little experiment that I discovered that The Coastal Oak, Centsational Style, and Chris Loves Julia had also tried it, but I didn’t know about it. It is still very helpful to see people in person so that I can define myself.

Rust oleum Metallic Finish Gold is the most convincing compared to the gold hardware finished with nearby Krylon Short Cuts Gold Leaf.

Three Best Brass Spray Paints For Diy Makeovers

None of the 8 spray colors come close to uncoated brass, so it’s still a search to see if there is one that matches the spray paint. But there really is no comparison to real unvarnished brass. You either go all in or you don’t go all in.

The clear winner for me is Rustoleum Metallic Finish Gold. This gold spray paint is really nice, no weird undertones, believable shine compared to high quality real paint, great coverage and great finish even with no spatter.

Now we know. You might find it useful for your next DIY project. Now I will need all the cases because I use this for everything.

First spray 1-2 coats of Rustoleum Metallic Finish Gold and let dry. Then apply Antique Gold Rub n Buff for added dimension to look the most like real gold.

Choose an object to spray paint in a well-ventilated area, away from anything that might spray. Apply only a thin, even layer of primer spray. After the primer has cured for the recommended drying time, apply 2-3 thin, even coats of spray paint in a continuous motion 12-18 inches from the object. It is better to use several thin coats rather than less thick coats to avoid dripping or smudging.
