Sherwin Williams Color Palette Generator – Today I’m bringing back a palette of paint colors that can help you when you want to change your home or room from warm tones to cool tones and vice versa.
For years, the number one paint question I get from my blog readers is how to transition a home from strong warm tones (yellows and golds) to cool tones (blues and grays). Choosing the right “color change” can be overwhelming when there are thousands of shades of blue and gray. Knowing what color transitions are and how to choose the right color can help you make a harmonious transition from warm to cool tones (or cool to warm tones) in your home.

A faux paint color is one that has a strong balance between warm and cool tones. Most colors can have something like 90% warm and 10% cool, the change will be closer to 50/50 or 60/40. If all the rooms in your home are yellow and golden brown, you’ll want to avoid including a strong cool gray or blue that has several warm tones because it doesn’t have enough balance to contribute to the soft transition.
Green Paint Shades That Prove It’s A Neutral
Benjamin Moore’s Coventry Gray is one of the best examples to show you what color change is because it has an almost perfect balance of warm and cool.
In this room below you can see the warm Coventry Gray on the wall. Warm shades of gray allow the combination of warm and cold tones in accessories, fabrics and equipment:
In this room below, note again the combination of warm and cool accessories, textiles and warm wooden floors with Coventry gray in the background. Transitional colors like Coventry Gray help bring warm yellows, golds and cool blues together where they work well:
Imagine having a bright yellow room next to this kitchen below, which is painted in a great neutral color – Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore. A bright yellow room will change well with this kitchen because Chelsea Gray is a gray that has more of a soft warm mixed with a cool gray. By the way, you can really see how this gray is a nice transition color because of the strong yellow in the wood floors:

Transition colors are easy to find at the paint store because transition colors are waves of paint that are about to transition into the next color. For example, if your home is full of warm yellows and you want to start mixing grays, look for a piece of gray paint next to green for warm grays. Benjamin Moore’s Abalone is a great transition color because it’s a light gray/brown with a cool undertone. The blue pillow helps us find a small hint of coldness in the color:
Transitional colors should not have an equal balance of warm and cool tones. For example, if you have a strong tan in your home and want some blue, colors like rain from Sherwin Williams are a great way to do that. Rain is probably something like 65% warm and 35% cold, and you can actually see that balance in the paint chip:
