Sherwin Williams Dove White Paint – You mentioned to me last week that the first project of the year was to paint the kitchen a little. The paint is the biggest change. Our kitchen has white cabinets, black granite and sea salt green on the walls. I want to paint the walls white. I think it would work well with a black table top.
So today I’m sharing some of my tried and true favorite white paint colors. I have had the opportunity to choose paint colors for many design projects and these whites have always been my choice.
Sherwin Williams Dove White Paint
The white dove is a beautiful warm white. It has some gray undertones, making it a soft creamy white, but nothing like yellow/white. This is a great color for walls, trim and cabinets.

Plain white is the color we painted our downstairs bathroom and I love it! It was named the color of the year in 2016 and I think it is one of the most versatile whites. This white paint is warm without being too yellow and too blue/hard. It gives a fresh clean look and is a sign of failure when you are struggling to make a decision.
The decorators are white – real white. It has a slight touch of gray that softens the color, but overall it’s my choice for a clean true white paint. I usually use it for cutting or cupboards.
We have Alabaster in our living room and it is a beautiful cozy warm white color. It is very similar to Benjamin Moore White Dove. It’s not too yellow and looks great next to the bright white trim. It is also a popular color used for ships.
Cloud White is a soft warm white and falls between White Dove and Simply White. It has neutral tones, which makes it very versatile. This color can be used for both walls, trim and even your ceiling!
The Most Popular White Paint Colors
Pure white is a pure white with a slight warmth which is perfect if you are looking for a true white that is not blue/black. If you are going for a white kitchen, this color is perfect for the cabinets. Also good for walls and decorations.
Chantilly Lace is another true white with a hint of blue to give it a clean look. It has a whiter color, so it fits in a room that uses cold tones in the overall decoration.
Now that I’ve shared my favorites, the hardest part is picking one. Below are some tips that I use for myself and my clients.
1. Limit your options. I like to collect a bunch of colors and then narrow it down to 3-4 options. More options than that can be overwhelming and make it difficult to make a decision.

2. The next step can be done in one of three ways. If you don’t mind painting swatches on the walls, you can paint 3 colors of your choice in several different areas of your room. A better option is to order multiple samples from Sampize.
Sampize is an online retailer that offers paint samples painted with real paint colors. This allows you to see what the actual color will look like without damaging your walls. You can store all the paint cans without having to clean them and throw them away.
Another option is to paint patterns on a large foam core board and move it around your room. Its purpose is to see how the colors look at different times of the day and with different amounts of light.
3. Another important thing to consider when choosing paint is gloss. I usually do eggshells for the walls, satin or semi-gloss for the finish, and plain for the ceiling. Gloss can affect color rendering, so it’s important to address this before selecting samples.

Dover White is white, but it’s not a LEGIT white, it’s a soft white with some BIG considerations.
Dover White is a warm paint color, which is one of the reasons you should be careful about using it as the MAIN white color (trim/roof/doors). The warmer and softer the white, the more limitations it has: the types of paint and products you can use with it.
With LRV over 82 years old, Dover White is white, but it’s not a light white. Dover White is noticeably milder, and borders on the upper end of the white range (more info HERE).
My Favorite Light Neutral Paint Colors

Yes and yes. With a slightly lower LRV, Dover White contains more dyes than the more popular warm white paint colors. And this color is WARM, meaning Dover White has a creamy yellow base. You can see this cream/yellow better if you combine it with cool tones, greige and even some brown/beige paint colors.
As with all colors, I recommend using SAMPLIZE. Sampize is a peel and stick paint sampler that you can easily bring into the room for over HALF THE PRICE of a traditional sample pan – and it’s delivered to your front door!
When it comes to white paint colors, I usually recommend doing the same white on the trim and walls for consistency. And while you can do it with Dover White, you can also pair it with a cleaner white like SW High Reflective White. Note that this brings out the depth/color of the Dover White less because you can see the contrast with the lighter white.

Notice the transition between the pure white of the cabinets and the WARM white (Dover White) in the crown molding and trim. When all is well, you can see how Dover White is not correct.
I won’t do it. When I suggest white to my Online Color Consulting clients, I choose a lighter shade that’s not too yellow, like Sherwin Williams, but it depends on the house and the color. its specific ends. Dover White can be slightly yellow for decoration.
Only if necessary. In general, Dover White has a stronger yellow-white color, which limits other finishes such as countertops, backsplashes and wall paint in the long run. Even if the awesome kitchen/style calls for it and looks GOOD, it’s too hot for the average home.
Dover White is not popular, but personally there are better options in the warm white world. I find yellow/cream very limiting when it comes to coordinating with other paint colors, countertops, tiles and decor. In fact, I listed it as one of the three whites I won’t paint my trim or cabinets …but that’s just me (wink).

I won’t rule you out on this color, but you should seriously consider how warm/creamy it is and if it’s a look your home and decor can support in the short and long term.
By the way, if you want a nice warm white for the cabinets or trim, I’d lean more toward Benjamin Moore Cloud White or Sherwin Williams Alabaster.
