It’s time for me to repaint my kitchen cabinets! I really want a rebuild, but my rebuild funds were very wisely invested in our 2017 Camaro 😉 (no regrets). And after saving some more money, our exterior renovation exploded into a much more expensive project. That’s good because I had a lot of fun experimenting and tackling different DIY projects in my little kitchen!

My husband and I painted the vinyl floors charcoal, installed open shelves – but years later we built asymmetrical cubes just for that. We painted the cabinets turquoise and then teal (and then got TWO printed magazine features!). However, I wanted to change a little again, so I repaired the wooden cabinets. Now they are in the most beautiful color: it’s a little blue, it’s blue, it’s gray – it’s just beautiful. It is very light and airy. Although this might be my favorite color

For the first version I used Zinsser Primer with Premier Paint (it held so well!!), for the second version I used Behr Cabinet & Trim Enamel (it was disappointing because it didn’t hold), and this time I used all primers / paint by Sherwin Williams.

Sherwin Williams did the paint for my mom’s dining room and living room and we love it! This was a welcome upgrade because the Sherwin Williams paint has great coverage – much better than Behr, which has been my choice for the past few years. But I really didn’t know what I was missing! Honestly, I thought it was a quality paint, but compared to Sherwin Williams, it’s watery. But to make sure I was unbiased, I decided to buy my own Sherwin Williams paint for this closet makeover to make sure I liked what I was spending my money on. And let me tell you, absolutely
The paint is expensive, but the coverage was just as great as the paint we used on my mom’s walls, and after months of use, the finish is perfect. I am so excited! Although I had some problems with the primer, I LOVE the color! Today I’m going to show you how I primed and painted the cabinets – along with some new products that made the job even easier (why didn’t I buy these sooner?).
After removing all the primer and varnish from my cabinets, I brought them inside and let them adjust for a few days (it was a little humid outside). The first time we painted the cabinets we did it on a warmer day and the wood swelled. The first winter the solid wood door shrunk a bit and exposed some unpainted wood that I had to repair. Not a big problem, but if possible, let the wood acclimate before painting.
I painted in the kitchen because it was too cold to work in the garage. I used an old vapor barrier to protect my surfaces and finally invested in this:

I wish I had bought these painting pyramids many cabinet upgrades ago! Sure, they slide a bit on the plastic and are really light and easy to tip, but they help and I recommend them. I just wish they were heavier and sturdier somehow. I started with the back of the cabinets and applied the primer. My local Sherwin Williams store recommends this:
I was told it was the most durable primer for this project and would be perfect for my cabinets. Unfortunately it took a few days to dry.
I painted the cabinets in the evening, and the next afternoon (almost 24 hours later – well past the touch-up and paint dry time), there were still paint streaks on my hands when I touched them:
That night, still sticky, I carefully turned them over to start on the front pages. I scraped one off and you can see how easily the coating came off 24 hours later:

After another 24 hours the first side I painted was a bit drier but still not 100% so I messed around with priming and painting the cabinets. I didn’t remove them, just sanded, primed and repainted.
After applying one layer on both sides, I had to wait a total of five days before the primer was dry enough to paint. I was worried at this point because I didn’t do two coats (I didn’t want to wait another 5 days – I was hungry and wanted to cook). But I went ahead and painted and luckily the paint dried very quickly. I was able to quickly do my two coats on both sides.
For ease of use, I like to pour some paint into a clear plastic container (I used to use the Handy Paint Pail stuff, but it’s easier and free). For my raised door fronts, I paint the grooves first, then the middle, then the outside:

Good! Using my paint sprayer for the turquoise version of these cabinets worked really well, but between this self-pouring paint and a quality brush, the end result is very smooth and free of brush strokes.
The first week I cleaned the cabinets, being careful not to scratch or rub off the paint. I’ve never seen any problems with the paint, but I’ve learned that paint usually takes a month to set. Today the finish line is fixed. It’s been a few months since I first painted the cabinets with Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. I wanted to wait to share this post so I could really talk about how the top coat sets and performs.
This Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint is of exceptional quality. It really flakes and comes off as it dries! The brush strokes were visible right after I painted them, but they really disappeared! In the past I went for a semi-glossy finish, but this time I went for satin and I love the velvety finish. The finish looks incredibly smooth, durable and fully cured – no issues, even with just one coat of problematic primer. Since then I cleaned it very hard and no problems.
I’m also in love with the color (Sherwin Williams Watery) which of course I couldn’t wait to show you! It’s so light and airy, but without the nursery – it’s a muted aqua without being clouded by grey. It is clean and bright, but soft and subtle. It’s so, so perfect.

When I had problems with the primer I immediately called the store and the salesperson who recommended the primer told me that the inside takes longer to dry than the outside because it was meant for outside. I asked why and he said “I don’t know… the sun?” So I went on a Google mission and talked about it on Instagram stories. Someone said that
Paint needs sunlight to dry but I also learned it can be poor air circulation. Of course, you have to change the air regularly, because it is saturated with paint solvents that can reduce the drying time of an oil-based product. I had a whole house air exchanger on it at the time, but that paled in comparison to working outside on a project, so my best guess is that it oversaturated the air because it was designed for outside use?
In any case, the employee who helped me was right: the primer is a great base, and it dried over time. I just wish I knew it would take this long because I didn’t plan it in my plan.
