If you want a durable, long-lasting paint finish on your furniture, preparation is key.

First, remove the doorknobs, hinges (or tape them to prevent paint from sticking) and the glass…basically remove anything you don’t want painted. Or tape it so it doesn’t stain.

Then clean the furniture with degreaser. If you’re on a tight budget, morning dish soap can do the trick.
Simply spray and rub the surface of your furniture with a wet rag. I also like to come back with a clean wet rag to make sure everything is off. then dry.

Then get plenty of stain remover primer. Yes, you need a lot. Especially if the black wood is painted white.

A water-based primer is basically a cheap white paint that helps the paint adhere better. My favorite primer is a shellac based primer.
Especially for this project, it’s a shellac based white primer. More specifically, I recommend a primer based on BIN shellac. (Not a down payment, something synthetic.)

My favorite way to apply BIN primer is by spraying from a spray bottle. But if that’s not an option, the next best thing is to roll it with a mini roller.
I use a 3/8 rolling pin or foam roller. But be careful that the pulley does not leave the hole. And when you spray it, it gets harder. Can also be applied with a brush. But it’s really thin, so I think brushing is a last resort.
You can clean it anyway using ammonia, denatured alcohol and acetone. Do not try to clean it with water. It does not work.
No. If you use a shellac-based primer (like BIN), you can skip the sanding step. Shellac has excellent adhesive properties. It even sticks to laminate without sanding.

I love how fast this primer dries! In fact, I hate how fast it dries because it’s really easy to overdo it because it dries quickly after you roll it on.
It usually dries to the touch within 15 minutes. But after 45 minutes it will be ready for another coat of primer or paint.
If you spray it, the primer will be quite hard. If you don’t sand it smooth before painting, your paint job will be just as rough.
If you roll on it, it will feel quite smooth. But it will likely have a lot of nicks and texture from rolling.

Yes you can. I don’t think it will reduce the durability of the paint in any way. But if you don’t sand after laying, the paint will have a lot of texture or roughness.

Now is also a good time to repair cracks, seams, details, dents…basically anything that looks black on white primer.
Emerald Urethane Semi Gloss: A Pro’s Review
When the furniture is just wood, these things usually don’t show as much. But when you put a white coat on the furniture, all those stains come out.
Most of the area can be filled with wood filler. Below are some of the best wood fillers for furniture. The layer can be easily filled with paintable sealant.
When you’re done, dust easily with the suction hose and brush attachment.
Then wipe the remaining dust with a cloth. The sticky cloth is very sticky and the dust can’t help but stick!

You will need at least 3 coats of primer for full coverage. If you are sanding primer on bare wood in certain areas, be sure to cover them completely before painting.
After your furniture is beautifully white from the primer, after the primer has dried overnight, and the paint spots are gone… then it’s time to paint! Wow!!

It is water-based but lasts as long as oil-based paints. This color is an upholstery and door color, so it’s really durable. More durable than latex paint. It is also an alkyd paint and is water based.

But when it dries and hardens, the water evaporates (I think?) and it’s actually an oil-based paint. So it lasts like an oil based paint!
