We understand that professional painters may have different ideas about colors. However, we prefer latex based products because we are a painter’s best friend and these methods have worked for us over the years.

Choose the right primer and you want to use latex enamel paints for cabinets. If your furniture is already painted, you can probably skip the first step. We talk about painting cabinets in our kitchen island painting post.

Choosing the right color is probably one of the most important things. I would also argue that choosing the right primer may be more important when considering painting your home’s cabinets.

I’ve read post after post of others saying you don’t have to give up your closets. I honestly feel like we saved time with the primer. Do not skip this step!!

Don’t let the price scare you. Just be sure to buy these colors when they are on 30% off that Sherwin Williams regularly sells. They usually have a 40% off sale at some point during the year.

In the past, we have always used latex enamel paints to paint furniture. I’m a big fan of the Sherwin Williams Pro Classic line.

However, after using the new Shirin Emerald Urtherane Trim Enamel Paint, I will never use another color to paint a cabinet.

The only downside was that the lock was sticky to the touch for a few days. But if we can handle the toddlers and not mess up the hallways, so can you!

How To Paint And Prime Kitchen Cabinets

If you plan to paint your kitchen cabinets while you’re away or like the smell, Kiel’s Primer, Bun Shellac, or another oil-based primer is a good choice.

Professional painters say that an oil-based primer is needed to prevent tannin or natural oozing from the wood. You need to be able to control the smell and mess even when using an oil-based primer.

Our favorite primer was Shirin Williams’ latex-based multipurpose primer because of its ease of use.

Since it is water-based, you may develop colored blood over time. We painted our oak kitchen cabinets 7 years ago and only have one rough door that shows a little paint. We just added another coat of paint.

Latex enamel paint offers the advantages of enamel paint, such as a hard surface without the harmful environmental problems of oil-based enamel paint.

The milky enamel paint can also be cleaned with soap and water. Latex is rubber mixed with oil pigments, resulting in a latex glaze hybrid that dries even faster than traditional oil-based glazes.

We love how our kitchen cabinet island was repainted using Sheer Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel Paint (don’t worry, it’s latex infused for easy cleanup).

According to the SW website, “This water-based urethane is modified with an alkyd interior/exterior look and feel with an alkyd/oil finish.” When reversed, it looks like an oil-based paint, but has the benefits of being latex-based.

Sharon Williams Emerald Paint is expensive (especially if you don’t buy it on sale). I also didn’t think about the exterior latex enamel in the charcoal blue we painted the cabinets and bathroom rail.

However, for some reason the high contact areas of the railing seem to have a strange texture that we never achieved with the Sherwin Williams paint.

That’s why I’ll probably stick with SW Latex nail polish or Benjamin Moore’s equivalent. I’m glad I tried a cheaper brand because it was a bit thin and fell off easily.

Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel Why We Use It?

Painted bathroom furniture is in the children’s bathroom and still looks good (even the children beat they can give the cabinets).

However, our railing is a bit more worn and has a few spots that look like they are chipping, as if a vacuum cleaner cord has been repeatedly rubbed along the edge.

In the near future, I’m sure I’ll be repainting the previously painted wood with a high-end latex varnish.

The exterior paint was thinner than its Sherwin-Williams counterpart. A third coat of paint was definitely needed.

My Review Of Sherwin Williams Pro Industrial Water Based Alkyd Urethane Enamel

I wouldn’t recommend this color for large projects, but it’s perfect for our smaller projects (you can see all the ways we’ve used this charcoal).

We have seen other DIY bloggers use deco satin paints and/or oil based glazes. And if you don’t want to paint but still want an easy way to transform your furniture, check out our gel painted bathroom cabinets.

Here you can see that we tested the different colors of the island with sample leather and stick paint samples. The great thing is that they are large and come in different color brands like Sherwin Williams. You can read our full sample review here.

We always use half a glass. This is why you don’t want to use chalk paint, you don’t want to use gray or even egg paint.

However, I recently went to Sherry Williams and apparently satin is a very common finish on furniture, especially kitchen cabinets.

Many people like to use semi-gloss upholstery and satin for cabinets. However, we have always used semi-gloss latex enamel paints for kitchen and bathroom cabinets. And let me tell you, the cabinets are easy to clean.

Guess what??? We have completely painted the kitchen furniture. The painted backsplash and all base cabinets are a bold color. We should see how it goes now!

Go to your local paint store (not a big box store) and ask for samples of different finishes. Although they are small, you can see different colors or wood with different finishes.

If you have the right setup and are confident with your paint sprayer (we recently put it to the test), spraying cabinets can be a great way to get a smooth finish. We find that the disadvantages of spraying are that it can be difficult to control.

If you are creating a storage station and can spray paint the doors and drawers, this may be something to consider. I’ve always had luck with a good brush and a small roller.

A 2.5 inch angled synthetic brush is the best choice when painting furniture with latex enamel. Some also like this tapered brush with a shorter handle for painting furniture.

Small foam rollers make it easier to control the amount of paint to be applied and leave a smooth surface when painting the cabinet.

2. Place the bases on the marked supports and mark the doors with masking tape. And the box. It’s always a good idea to map out a large area so you can put everything back in place.

Lightly sand the wood with 220 fine sandpaper, we like to use a sanding block and just follow the grain. Not much to do here. You’re just trying to give the primer some “texture” that will stick.

5. Use a brush to get into the creases of your furniture, then use a small foam roller to apply the primer. Make sure you don’t have any drips.

8. Put the eggs back in and add hardware if desired. Be sure to wait as long as possible before doing this. You want the painted cabinet to dry completely. We also waited all week for the kitchen island. You can even paint the rings to give yourself a new look.

We really love to paint all surfaces, walls with our favorite colors or even accent walls to create a new atmosphere in our home.

Furniture painting, done right, is one of the cheapest ways to renovate your kitchen or bathroom.

Painting Furniture White

If my cabinets are white now, do I need to trim them? Will small dents and stains be covered with new paint or filled with wood filler?
