This is where a screwdriver or drill comes in handy. You will first need to remove the front of the cabinet door. Write the name of the cabinet on the hinge hole (behind the door) and cover it with a piece of tape so that it is not covered with paint (especially if you use a sprayer). Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer is so harsh that you don’t need to use gloss remover, but it helps ensure good adhesion. We don’t use a polish, but I’ve seen people do it successfully.

How To Paint Your Cabinets Like The Pros With Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
There are two ways to get paint and primer on your cabinets: rolling or spraying. With Sherwin Williams Urethane Enamel and the tips below, you can achieve a smooth finish either way. Spraying is a bit faster (we did it), but if you don’t want to invest in a paint sprayer, rolling paint is totally doable.
Tip: Do the backs of the cabinets first and finish the fronts (primed and painted).
Now that the faces and doors have received a light sanding, it’s time to prime. I recommend using Purdy’s 4” Jumbo Mini Roller on prime cabinet face frames and cabinet doors as well. If you have shaker doors or doors with openings, use an angled brush to get into the slots first.
We lined up our cabinets on the saw horses and placed some MDF skirting on the 2x4s to protect the cabinets. You can also buy some small paint triangles to hold your cabinets in place, but we found it much easier to put the cabinets on 2x4s since we had a whole driveway to work with. We used our Wagner sprayer to spray the primer and it wasn’t very fast. We still use rollers on the cabinet front frames.

Go ahead and get your 320 – 400 grit sandpaper and sand it down. Use a tacky cloth to remove all dust. You only need one or two primers, if you apply two sands between each coat. The primer dries quickly, so you can apply two layers of primer a day.

How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets Like A Professional
Tip: Wrap the roller and brush in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight and use again the next day (and until the project is finished). This will save you a lot of cleaning time.
If you use a paint sprayer, make sure the surface under your cabinets is free of dust and debris. A paint sprayer will blow strong air with the paint and blow dust from the wet paint. That’s why we like to use sawhorses to get cabinet doors off the ground. The downside is that we are outside and the shmutz blows off our cabinet fronts when the wind blows. We did 3 coats of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel (4 hour dry time between coats) and didn’t get shmutz for our final coat because we finished painting our garage. .
The key here is to use an oil-like paint such as SAND and Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim Urethane Enamel. If you have small spots (oh flying bugs), whether you use a sprayer or a roller, you should let the paint dry and sand using fine sandpaper (think 300 – 400 grit).
