Not everyone wants white kitchen cabinets. That’s true! Dark kitchen cabinets still work well, and today’s post is a great example of that. Let me show you how I painted these beautiful kitchen cabinets in Dark Espresso using General Finish Dark Chocolate!

The homeowner wanted dark kitchen cabinets, and this espresso color works well with the new countertops, appliances, and backsplash.
As for the paint color choice, I knew I wanted a shiny dark brown but not too dark or close to black. After showing a few color samples to my client, we finally settled on one color: dark chocolate Milesi 2k finish with a normal transparent surface.
It is definitely one of those colors that represents what it is called. When I started painting these cabinets with this brown paint, they really looked like dark chocolate.

If you can’t find this color, or just want some different options, I recommend Benjamin Moore’s Espresso Bean (CSP-30). This color is very close to the color I used in this kitchen.
When it comes to cabinet maintenance, thorough sanding of each piece of original finish will penetrate the raw wood so that the new stain can penetrate. And it will be worth it.
PLUS, I showed the homeowner pictures of dark stained cabinets and dark painted cabinets before we started and he liked the look of the painted cabinets.

SW Iron Ore is a dark gray graphite color often used on doors, exterior surfaces, furniture and accent walls. Iron ore is a lighter shade of black than Tricorn Black, Black Magic and Caviar.

The SW Black Fox lives in a different pattern than most of the blacks I recommend in this article. Black Fox shares a pattern with Repose Grey, Mindful Gray and Dorian Grey.
This chocolate brown color is a rich blend of black and brown and will go well with garage doors, trim and front doors. Black Fox is part of the Pottery Barn Spring / Summer 2020 color collection.
SW Tricorn Black belongs to the family of neutral paints and is a darker shade of black than Iron Ore and Black Fox.
The color is a true black with no strong undertones (a good choice if you want true black stripes). It is often used on exterior doors, window coverings, furniture and walls.
Sherwin Williams Peppercorn: Color Spotlight
SW Black Magic has the same LRV score as Tricorn Black and Caviar, all three are true dark blacks. Black Magic has more red accents than Tricorn Black which is slightly warmer than Tricorn Black.
SW Caviar lives up to its name as a dark black ink in the neutral ink family. Similar to Black Tricorn, but with a touch of brown. When I compared samples of Black Magic and Caviar, they were very similar.
SW GreenBlack is a modern blend of black and green. Slightly lighter black than Caviar, Black Magic and Black Tricorn. Personally, I chose this color as an option for our front doors and shutters (currently painted green).
SW inkwell has more blue than red and green and has a cool black color. Depending on the light, this color can appear dark blue.
