Almost every day I get emails from readers wondering where and how to start choosing the right colors to complement the look of their home. Most of the time, I get contacted by readers who have been thinking a lot about color for weeks and don’t know how to make a final decision.

Today I want to share some tips to quickly and easily create the perfect exterior paint for your home. There are some very simple techniques to make decision making easier and less painful. I use a process of elimination when choosing interior colors as well as when choosing exterior colors. By eliminating undertones and shadows, the perfect color stands out and you can identify the perfect color almost instantly.

Before we get into the tips and tricks, we’ve rounded up some of the best exterior colors we found in this week’s printable palette.
(Just to be clear, each Monday’s color palette is a printable palette. Paint colors printed on paper will look very different than they do on a computer screen. We print our palettes glossy white. 1) When considering changing the exterior paint, the first thing to do is remove any unwanted undertones and decide if you want the trim color to blend in and out with the color of your home. I want color contrast:
2) Once you’ve decided whether you want to mix or contrast colors, decide “roughly” what shade you want. If you have a brick house, you can take one of the Sherwin Williams bricks and match it with the darkest or lightest shade of brick paint. If you don’t have the extra blocks, ask Sherwin Williams for a fun deck and match the blocks to the paint color of the ball deck.

If you have multiple color blocks and want the trim color to blend and fade, it is recommended to choose a neutral block color (neither the lightest nor the darkest). If you want contrasting brick colors, choose the darkest or lightest brick color.
For non-brick homes, you can increase or decrease the paint color of your home by a tone or two if you want to harmonize your decor. Consider white (or off-white) or dark (black, dark brown or dark gray) for contrast.
If you are considering white, ask Sherwin Williams to add 10% of your house paint to pure white. Sherwin Williams Pure White is a true white as it has a white base. Add some house paint so the base is the same as the house. This would make a big difference and just use white.

4) Once you have a “rough” idea of what color/shade you want, take a swatch of a color close to what you want, paint two large poster boards with that color and tape them to your front door (you basically want cover your front door). Morning, noon and night I go out into town and see the colors first. There are strange shades depending on the time of day. Write down the colors you like and dislike at different times of the day.
If the color and tone/undertone of the color swatches are just right, but the colors are too dark or too light, ask the paint shop staff to change them to 50% white (lighter) or 50% of the next color (lighter). ) and ask them to shuffle another color sample card. Paint two more poster boards and tape them back to the door and look at the colors all day.
If the color is very close to what you want, but it’s a weird shade and the undertone doesn’t work, ask your paint shop rep what’s wrong (too green, too blue, too beige, etc.) I’ll tell you. You know exactly what to add to counteract the color, the undertones. Once they’ve adjusted your colors, get another sample mix, repaint both poster boards, and spend the day, feel free to look.
